The Course

Sheshan International Golf Club (West) will play this weekend as a par 72 course, running 7,261 yards. The field will putt on bentgrass greens for the third week in a row. The fairways are lined with trees and are average in terms of width. However, there are water hazards on 11 holes and a considerable number of fairway bunkers. Score relative to par has made this course the third most difficult over the last three years. Fairways in regulation and greens in regulation percentages at Sheshan International are lower than the PGA Tour average. Three of the four par 5 holes are longer than 550 yards, so par 5 scoring average is an important metric to consider. All four of the par 3 holes are longer than 200 yards, so golfers with a solid average on par 3 holes between 200 and 225 yards should be on your wager card.

The Favorites

Tony Finau came finished T11 in 2018 and was the runner-up all by himself last year. He is one of the top strikers and drivers on the PGA Tour. He finished T59 last week, which is why he has slid down the odds list a bit. Take advantage of that added value by putting him on your list of wagers. Rory McIlroy comes off the tee as well as anyone else. Over his last six tournaments, he has gained almost a full stroke on the rest of the field in hit fairway percentage, ranking first in Strokes Gained: Off The Tee during that time period. Last year, he failed to crack the top 50 at this tournament, but he is rightly the favorite because of his form and his suitability for this course. Patrick Reed is not as solid off the tee as McIlroy or Finau, but he is still in the top 10 for Strokes Gained: Off the Tee in the last six events. Also, his short game is solid enough for him to climb the leaderboard here. He is in the top 30 in par 5 scoring and in the top ten in sand save percentage during his last 24 rounds. He has finished in the top ten twice at this tournament in the last four years. J.T. Poston finished last year well, cruising to the BMW Championship and getting a T16 finish, and then he finished in the top 15 at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Last week, he carded a top 30 result in Japan. His ball striking is particularly strong, as his last five tournaments have seen him gain 3.3 strokes from tee to green. He is in the top 15 in par 3 scoring average on holes between 200 and 225 yards, and he is in the top 25 for par 5 scoring average in his last six events.
