AAF Week 3 Betting Preview & Picks

Written by on February 19, 2019

The Alliance of American Football saw its second weekend of action this past week, and there are still three unbeaten teams in the fledgling league. The Orlando Apollos have the most high-flying offense in the AAF right now, thanks to SMU product Garrett Gilbert at quarterback. He put up 393 passing yards with two touchdowns last week. The Apollos also have two defensive touchdowns in two games. The Arizona Hotshots and the Birmingham Iron are the two other undefeated teams in the league. We have your AAF betting preview for this coming weekend’s AAF Week 3 action.

AAF Week 3 Betting Preview & Picks

Saturday, February 23

Arizona at Salt Lake City (3:00pm ET, Bleacher Report Live)

Salt Lake City is 0-2, but they have put forth spirited efforts in both games. Quarterback Josh Woodrum went down to injury in the opener, and Matt Linehan came on in relief, but Austin Allen started last week. Going to your third-string quarterback in your second game is a difficult way to start the season. Can they group to host Arizona? Arizona is 2-0 after holding off Memphis in Week 2, putting up 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to take the win. Quarterback John Wolford led the AAF in passing in Week 1, but the Hotshots rode the running game to a win last week, as the team ran for 209 yards and had three different ball carriers with at least 50 yards. AAF Week 3 Betting Prediction: Arizona 24, Salt Lake City 16

Memphis at Orlando (8:00pm ET, NFL Network)

Orlando’s defense permitted 29 points last week — but got a pick-six — in a win over a solid San Antonio squad. Garrett Gilbert set a new AAF record with those 393 yards — but league records will fall often in this first season. The 37 points that Orlando put up were impressive given that these teams are still getting to know one another. Memphis was shut out in their opener and took a 12-0 lead against Arizona before allowing that comeback. Quarterback Christian Hackenberg has the lowest yard totals in each of the first two weeks, although he did run for 39 yards in Week 2. Without more offense, Memphis is in trouble this week. AAF Week 3 Betting Prediction: Orlando 31, Memphis 16

Sunday, February 24

Birmingham at Atlanta (4:00pm ET, CBS Sports)

Atlanta has permitted 64 points in their first two games, the most in the AAF by a large margin. The offense has just one scoring drive — but they already have five turnovers. So we see why they are 0-2 — and likely to continue that streak unless things change. Birmingham is 2-0 — but it’s a shaky 2-0. In Week 2, they recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown that made the difference in a 12-9 win, as their offense has struggled. Tailback Trent Richardson has carried the ball 42 times for 99 yards in the first two games. He has scored three touchdowns, all in the opener, but that yards-per-carry of 2.3 is not impressive. Luckily, they’re playing a soft Atlanta defense this week. AAF Week 3 Betting Prediction: Birmingham 20, Atlanta 9

San Antonio at San Diego (8:00pm ET, NFL Network)

San Antonio has recorded ten sacks in two games, which is especially impressive since teams are only allowed to rush five defenders. Tailback Kenneth Farrow, who used to play for the L.A. Chargers, ran for 74 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts. That combination of offense and defense will be tough to beat. San Diego waited until the last nine minutes of Week 2 to score the first points in team history, thanks to Ja’Quan Gardner, who ran for 104 yards in the game and got both of those touchdowns. Before that, the Fleet had tried to run a passing game, but they went just 14 for 30 in Week 2 before figuring out how to win on the ground. AAF Week 3 Betting Prediction: San Antonio 24, San Diego 20
