2019 British MotoGP Odds, Predictions & Preview

The British Motorcycle Grand Prix last year had to be canceled because of rainy weather, the first cancellation of a MotoGP event since 1980 in Austria. Last year, the cancellation had to do with the large pools of water that had gathered on the track, making for hazardous conditions. This year, the forecast calls for clear weather and sunny skies. In the MotoGP standings, Marc Marquez of Repsol Honda has a 58-point lead in the standings over Andrea Dovizioso of Mission Winnow Ducati. However, the track at Silverstone has yielded five different winners in the last five years, so despite Marquez’s dominance this season, there are no guarantees this week. We have your MotoGP odds for the riders as well as thoughts for wagers on the race.

The Race Course

The infield at Silverstone is tight and complicated for turns, but there are also some long straights that allow for speed to play a role. The course has been repaved since the 2018 cancellation, but there will not be any MotoGP testing ahead of the race weekend. That means that there is a great deal of suspense going into this week’s preparation and the weekend’s action.

The Favorites

The riders for the Yamaha team should be optimistic this weekend, with four wins in the last eight British MotoGP runnings, and in the years that a Yahama rider did not win, Yamaha had representation on the podium. Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales have both won here in the past few years, and Fabio Quartararo is also a solid contender here after his work in the summer races. Vinales has had a tough year; in the first eight races of 2019 he had 40 points — and three crashes. He has struggled in qualifying to get to the front row, and so he has lost too much time in the early phases of races trying to find his way out of the herd at the middle of the pack. For riders looking to catch Marquez in the point standings, it is worth noting that he has won just once here in five tries in the premier riding class, and that was way back in his historic run in 2014, and he has just one other podium appearance here. He took a tough loss at Austria, as Dovizioso blew by him at the last corner on the course — and Dovizioso is the defending champion here. This is the week for the runner-up to push matters, because later courses in the end of summer and the fall are more along the line of what Marquez excels at winning.

Podium Picks

As far as podium picks go, I see Marquez, Dovizioso and Vinales taking the top three slots. If Marquez doesn’t make the podium, his lead in the point standings means that he is still fine heading into the fall races. However, if Vinales or Dovizioso do not finish the race due to problems on the course, that could seriously impact their opportunities in the standings — and potentially their standings with their teams. Given that Dovizioso needs to catch up and Vinales has a track record of success at Silverstone, seeing Marquez slide to second or third here would not be particularly surprising. After all, Marquez has some easier courses for his style coming up on the MotoGP slate. But if you are looking at a podium prop, consider those three. If you want to play for some value, pick Vinales to win — after all, that would keep the streak of different winners each year alive, and Vinales has the ability and the course history to deliver the upset.
