F1 2019 Singapore Grand Prix Odds & Betting Preview

Ferrari is finally mounting a challenge to Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton, but it is not Sebastian Vettel leading the charge, but instead it is Charles Leclerc, who won his first Formula 1 title in Belgium and then did it again a week later in Italy. Ferrari had not won an Italian Grand Prix since Fernando Alonso snatched the victory in 2010. Leclerc got aggressive with Hamilton, forcing him from the road at the second chicane’s braking zone. Hamilton still leads the drivers’ championship by 63 points over Valtteri Bottas (his Mercedes teammate), and Mercedes remains 154 points ahead of Ferrari in the constructors’ championship. What can we expect in the 2019 Singapore Grand Prix? Don’t miss our F1 betting preview for this Sunday’s race.

The Course

Singapore is unique because the race takes place at night, with the course illuminated by 1,600 custom-made floodlights. The drivers run against the backdrop of the skyline of Singapore; the race takes place at night because of the extreme heat this time of year. Even in the evening, the temperature will approach 90 degrees Fahrenheit with humidity at or near 80 percent, so drivers will sweat buckets while driving. Former F1 driver Stoffel Vandoorne called this race the “Singapore Sauna” because of the water loss he experienced each year. The course itself is also physically demanding, with a bumpy road and 23 corners. It is important to approach most of the corners more slowly than one would on other courses, and the walls can feel closer than they are, in part because of the nighttime conditions, and the result can be one mistake that leads to a pileup. The forecast is warm and humid with the possibility of some light showers.

Are you thinking about putting your money on Vettel to mount a comeback?

He is tied with Lewis Hamilton for the most wins among active drivers at this course, with four apiece. He also has four pole positions here. He won three straight Singapore Grands Prix from 2011 to 2013 while driving for Red Bull. Last year, he had a chance to overtake Max Verstappen and finish in second place, but a poor tire choice betrayed him down the streetch. Ferrari has benefited from a couple of courses that reward speed and power on the straights, but the course in Singapore will be much different. Instead, cornering will be a premium technical skill, which means that Mercedes and Red Bull could be duking it out. This could lead to another classic finish between Verstappen and Hamilton. Verstappen looks like a solid pick, so the team is going with the soft tire compound. These are the same tires Mercedes and Hamilton used a year ago to snatch the win away from Ferrari and Vettel. Renault looks like the top pick among the midfield contenders, as Daniel Ricciardo and Nico Hulkenberg finished fourth and fifth in Italy, their best result in the last four seasons.

Expert Picks

My top two picks from this race are Verstappen and Hamilton. Verstappen has made noise for Red Bull on courses that do not reward speed on the straight portions of the course. Given the fact that Leclerc has won two in a row, betting on Hamilton offers more value than it has in months, and he is motivated to lock up the drivers’ championship as soon as possible. I would bet on both him and Verstappen to push hard this week, benefiting from the bettors’ momentary doubts of Hamilton’s front-runner status in Formula 1.
