In the main event, Gennady Golovkin (-175) comes with a 38-0-1 record — with all but four of his wins coming via knockout. He fought last in May, taking down Vanes Martirosyan in a second-round knockout — over a tomato can who hadn’t fought since 2016. Golovkin has a 70-inch reach and stands 5’10”. At age 36, he should still have plenty in the tan for this sort of fight. He did have some issues in two of his last three fights, but he is still a highly aggressive fighter, always moving toward his opponent and forcing quick decisions that often lead to mistakes, so that he can bring those big punches that end fights. His jab is also stout, and his footwork is likely underrated, as is his hand speed. He does eat a lot of punches, particularly for someone at the top of the sport, and there are ways through his defense, but his toughness makes him tough to start. In the draw against Alvarez last year, he didn’t look fazed by any of the blows that Canelo brought. Canelo Alvarez (+150) enters with 11 more wins than GGG, and with the same number of knockouts as his counterpart. He has won seven of eight bouts but has not entered the ring since his draw with Golovkin back in September. He has fought two or three times per year throughout his career, so it will be interesting to see how this lengthy time away from the ring affects his fighting — his longest hiatus since he entered the pro ranks 13 years ago. He is an inch shorter than GGG but has the same reach, and he brings heavy blows as well, as eight of his last 13 wins have come via the knockout. He has a reputation for furious combination punching, and he also has the ability to defend convincingly. He found ways to take GGG’s punches in the first bout, and he also has a way to dodge big blows without surrendering a lot of position. In the first bout, most observers thought that Golovkin outclassed Alvarez and deserved to win. It is true that Alvarez is younger and has more athleticism, but that didn’t appear to matter last year, as Golovkin outpunched Alvarez in 10 of the fight’s 12 rounds. Yes, Golovkin has defense issues, but his aggressiveness should help him take this fight. If you like Alvarez, then you think that he will have a more successful rebuttal to Golovkin’s barrage of punches this time and will be able to mount his own success. With the number of punches that Golovkin threw and landed the first time around, Alvarez should not have gotten a draw off the cards. You can believe that Golovkin will be hungrier this time around and will have none of the rust that Alvarez could likely have coming in. Canelo vs GGG 2 Betting Prediction: Golovkin wins via knockout
