2019 CFL Week 18 Odds, Preview & Picks

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats have righted the ship, winning three in a row and now leading the CFL’s East Division by 3 ½ games over the Montreal Alouettes. The other two teams in the East — the Ottawa Redblacks and the Toronto Argonauts — have lost seven in a row and three in a row, respectively, as Ottawa now sits at 3-11 while Toronto sits at 2-12. In the West Division, the hottest team is the basement-dwelling British Columbia Lions, who have won four in a row and now sit at 5-10, still somehow in the race for a playoff position. Saskatchewan has won three in a row and now leads the West by a game over Calgary and 1 ½ games over Winnipeg, now losers of three straight, while Edmonton continues to shuffle along at 7-8. We have the full schedule for this weekend’s action as well as CFL betting predictions for each matchup.

Friday, October 11

Ottawa at Toronto

The East Division’s Toilet Bowl is taking place on Friday night. Ottawa comes off a bye but suffered a loss to Edmonton by five two weeks ago. Starting quarterback Dominique Davis went down in the fourth quarter for the Redblacks but is expected to return this week. He has not been consistent for Ottawa, with just five touchdown passes against 14 interceptions. As long as ball security is this much of an issue for Ottawa, it is hard to pick them…in most cases.

Toronto, of course, may be the exception. The Argonauts got demolished by BC last week, 55-8. James Franklin had taken over the offense but just had 32 passing yards through three quarters, and then McLeod Bethel-Thompson came back on in the fourth quarter, leading the Argonauts to their only touchdown. In the middle of a quarterback controversy, Toronto might be in an even worse tailspin than the Redblacks.

Final Score Prediction: Ottawa 24, Toronto 20

Saskatchewan at Calgary

Saskatchewan heads to Calgary riding the momentum of a win over the Blue Bombers in which they forced three takeaways and limited Winnipeg to just six points, behind eight tackles by Solomon Elimimian and seven tackles and a pick from L.J. McCray. Cody Fajardo went 18 for 28 for 300 yards and a score in the game, with Shaq Evans catching seven balls for 193 yards and that score.

Calgary lost on the road in their last game, falling to Montreal by four points. Bo Levi Mitchell played well, going 31 for 43 for 464 yards and a score, but he also had a back-breaking pick. His top target was Josh Huff, catching nine balls for 149 yards and the touchdown. The problem for Calgary is that they just had too many drives stall.

Final Score Prediction: Saskatchewan 27, Calgary 23

Saturday, October 12

Montreal at Winnipeg

Montreal pulled off the upset last week, beating Calgary by four points. Vernon ADams Jr went just 18 for 29 for 206 yards but also scored on the run. Eugene Lewis led the team with four receptions for 86 yards. On defense, the Alouettes had four takeaways and got ten tackles from linebacker Bo Lokombo.

Winnipeg lost in Saskatchewan last week, 21-6. Chris Streveler went just 26 for 40 for 254 yards with a pair of picks. Darvin Adams did have eight catches for 109 yards but was unable to find the end zone. On defense, the Blue Bombers permitted 370 yards of offense and 21 points. Montreal won the previous game here and should prevail once again as the Blue Bombers look to be in an extended slide.

Final Score Prediction: Montreal 27, Winnipeg 20

BC at Edmonton

The Lions erupted for 55 points last week, and now they face a team who is slightly up the standings a bit, but if they want to continue their run for a playoff spot, they will have to start beating better teams. Mike Reilly threw for 276 yards and five scores, as the Lions showed that offense is really not the problem — it is the defense, as they still have a -15 point differential on the season after winning by 49.

Edmonton got taken to the woodshed by Hamilton in their last game, permitting 42 points. Hamilton, at least on paper, is a lot better than BC, so Edmonton should be able to rebound. But can they stop this BC winning streak?

Final Score Prediction: BC 45, Edmonton 38
