2018 THE PLAYERS Championship Golf Betting Preview

TPC Sawgrass in Florida’s Ponte Vedra Beach is the site for THE PLAYERS Championship in 2018. This tournament is sometimes called the “fifth major” because of its venerable reputation, and Sawgrass is one of the harder courses that tour players will see. Rory McIlroy is one of the sports betting favorites to win here, although Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas and Jason Day are seeing as possible winners as well. Take a look at our golf betting perspective on this weekend’s tournament.

Rory  McIlroy has been flirting with victory for several weeks now. At the Masters, he looked like he was headed to a win until things fell apart on Sunday. At the Wells Fargo Championship, he imploded in the second round, and Day went on to win the tournament. If he can put four solid days together, eh could run away with this field. Henrik Stenson has shown solid form — and he’s available with a +3000 moneyline. He has cracked the top 10 four times in his last six tournaments. Last week, he came in 19th at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He leads the tour in driving accuracy percentage and greens in regulation percentage, and he ranks third in scoring average. He won this tournament in 2009, and at Sawgrass he has finished in the top 20 in four of his last six tournaments. Francesco Molinari brings a +5500 moneyline but has played better recently, making it into the top 25 in four of his last six tournaments. He has made the cut in eight of his last nine tournaments, and he came in sixth at this tournament in 2017 — and has finished in the top 10 here three times. He has never won one of the bigger tournaments, but with this sort of value on the table he might be a solid pick. Kim Si-woo is the defending champion at this tournament — and he comes in with a +10000 moneyline. It is true that the tournament only has six multiple winners, and no one has ever repeated here. However, he was in the top 25 here in 2016, and he has hit the top 25 in three of his last four tournaments, including coming in second at the RBC Heritage. He’s usually around on Sundays, so at that value, he’s definitely worth considering. Matt Kuchar makes cuts every week and keeps finishing in the top 20 or 30; he is just looking for a breakthrough. He won this tournament back in 2012 and came in third two years ago. In three of his last five starts at Sawgrass, he has cracked the top 20. He brings a +6600 moneyline, so you might consider him on your card. Rickie Fowler won this event in 2015, prevailing over Kevin Kishner and Sergio Garcia in a playoff. He also was the runner-up at the Masters, so he has the form to take this tournament as well. Paul Casey is here with 48-1 odds, and he tied for fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship. He won at the Valspar Championship earlier this year, and his last round at the Masters represented a furious comeback that ended up falling short. He’s definitely someone to consider here. Nick Watney is available at 125-1, and he has made 11 cuts in a row. At the Wells Fargo Championship, he came in third, showing significant improvement over recent results. A solid four days at Sawgrass could bring him a title. Martin Kaymer and Adam Scott are a pair of former THE PLAYERS Championship winners in the field, but they have not been playing well as of late. They are available at 125-1 and 50-1, respectively.
