2019 The Northern Trust Odds & Betting Preview

Written by on August 7, 2019

The 2019 FedExCup Playoffs are here, and the first of three events takes place at Liberty National in New Jersey for the Northern Trust. This week, 122 golfers descend on the course, as Sam Burns is injured, Paul Casey is resting and Henrik Stenson is focusing on the European Tour. The cut line will sit at the top 70 and ties. The course runs almost 7,400 yards, at a par 71, and it hosted the 2009 Barclays. That year, it was the eighth hardest course on the PGA Tour, with golfers putting up 176 double bogeys and 40 scores of triple bogey or worse. In 2013, it also hosted the Barclays, with 170 double bogeys and 24 scores of triple or worse, ranking 22nd in difficulty. However, the median score dropped from 71.48 to 71.21, not a huge difference. There are still ten water hazards, 90 bunkers and greens that undulate and run fast. We have the golf odds for your contenders as well as suggestions for your wager cards.

Webb Simpson

Simpson has three second-place finishes in his last five events and seven top-25 finishes in his last nine. He has enjoyed playing Liberty National Golf Club in the past. He has been knocking on the door a lot more lately — which is why he has been climbing the moneyline lists. It is hard to leave someone who seems due like Simpson does off the cards.

Billy Horschel

Horschel is an interesting sleeper for this week. He has two straight top-10 finishes, and he posted a -16 a week ago. He generally finishes seasons better than he started; in 2018, he had three consecutive top-five results to close the season, including second place in the TOUR Championship. Three years ago, he had four top-15 finishes in his last seven tournaments to finish the year. If you are looking for value, and solid form late in the year, he is someone to consider.

Tiger Woods

Woods won the Masters and since then has fallen off the table. At the Open Championship, he simply looked old, with his back stiffening up multiple times. However, the last two times Liberty National Golf Club has hosted this event, Woods has been the runner-up. He needs a solid result here if he plans to defend that TOUR Championship in a few weeks. There are few golfers who play as well with their backs against the wall. Because of the value, he is worth considering.

Jason Day

Day won the Northern Trust four years ago at New Jersey’s Plainfield Country Club, and he came in second the year before at Ridgewood Country Club. His 2019 results have not been what he would have wanted, but we have seen other players figure things out in the playoffs and go on lengthy runs — and he has the value to make him an interesting option.

Adam Scott

Scott has been feast or famine this year. He has missed four cuts since the Sony Open, and his St. Jude Classic performance was nothing spectacular. When he does make the cut, though, things tend to go a lot differently. He finished in second place at the Memorial Tournament earlier this year, and he won The Barclays when it was at Liberty National Golf Club in 2013. A solid track record on a course as tough as this is something to bear in mind.
