Top MLB Betting Picks of the Week – July 15th

The Texas Rangers opened the second half of the season with a pair of wins over the American League West-leading Houston Astros, getting to within seven games in the division…and then dropped the next to, settling for a series of split, and remain nine games back, and 2 ½ games out of the second wild card position, as the Rangers’ early momentum seems to be waning. In the AL East, the New York Yankees still lead Tampa Bay by six games, and Boston by ten, while Cleveland keeps creeping closer in the AL Central, now just 6 ½ games behind the Minnesota Twins. In the National League, Washington sits seven games behind Atlanta in the East, while the Chicago Cubs have opened up a little room in the Central, now 2 ½ games ahead of Milwaukee. In the West, the Los Angeles Dodgers continue to pull away, now leading Arizona and Colorado by 14 ½ games. Arizona at Texas (8:05pm ET)

  • Projected Pitching Matchup: Alex Young (2-0, 0.68 ERA) (ARI) vs Lance Lynn (12-4, 3.69 ERA) (TEX)
Lefty Alex Young makes his third start of the season for Arizona on Tuesday night in Texas. HIs first two starts have been solid, with 11 combined innings of three-hit, one-run ball (with the only run coming on a solo shot. He is limited on his pitch counts right now as the Diamondbacks work on building his arm strength, as he has not gone past 75 pitches in either start, but finishing six innings under 75 pitches, as he did against the Colorado Rockies on July 7, shows a considerable amount of control. He will face an offense in Texas that is significantly better in terms of average and power than the ones in San Francisco and Colorado. Young’s counterpart is Lance Lynn, who leads Major League Baseball with 12 wins and who has won five consecutive starts, dropping his ERA from 4.40 to 3.69 over that span. Over his last three starts, he has thrown 22 combined innings, permitting just two earned runs on 18 hits, striking out 26 while walking just three. In his last start, against Houston on Thursday, he threw seven innings of shutout ball, scattering six hits and fanning 11. With this kind of stuff, Lynn should be able to manage the Arizona lineup. MLB Betting Prediction: Texas 4, Arizona 1

Atlanta at Milwaukee (2:10pm ET)

  • Projected Pitching Matchup: Dallas Keuchel (3-2, 3.09 ERA) (ATL) vs Chase Anderson (4-2, 4.27 ERA) (MIL)
Dallas Keuchel got a late start to the 2019 campaign, because of the delay that he experience in finding a free-agent deal, and his numbers show some shakiness in the early going; in his first two starts, he gave up six earned runs on 16 hits (including three home runs) in games against Washington (a loss) and the Cubs (a win). Since then, though, he has found his groove, throwing 21 ⅓ combined innings in his last three starts, permitting five runs on 16 hits and fanning 12, as his ERA has dropped from 5.06 to 3.09. The 2015 Cy Young winner in the American League has plenty of reason to pitch for redemption after waiting so long for teams to sign him, and throwing for a contender certainly doesn’t hurt. Chase Anderson gets the start on Wednesday for the Brewers. He has not gotten a decision since June 27, as the Milwaukee bullpen has let leads get away in three straight games. Over his last four starts, Anderson has not permitted more than two earned runs, throwing a combined 20 innings and allowing 16 hits and seven earned runs, striking out 17 while walking two. He has the stuff to throw five decent innings, but he hasn’t shown the stamina to last any further, with only one start this season in which he has completed six innings. I like the Braves to take advantage of the Milwaukee relievers and get this road win. MLB Betting Prediction: Atlanta 5, Milwaukee 3
