Top MLB Betting Picks of the Week – August 13th Edition

Written by on August 13, 2018

The Boston Red Sox just keep on winning — with nine victories in their last ten games, they now lead the New York Yankees by 9 ½ games in the American League East. Cleveland has pushed out to a 12-game lead over the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central, while Oakland has closed the gap to just 2 ½ games with Houston in the AL West. In the senior circuit, the Atlanta Braves and the Philadelphia Phillies are tied atop the NL East, while the Cubs have moved 2 ½ games ahead of Milwaukee in the NL Central — but watch out for the St. Louis Cardinals, who have won eight of ten to move within five games of Chicago. In the NL West, Arizona has moved back in front of the Dodgers by a game. Take a look at our three primo MLB betting matchups for the week ahead.

Top MLB Betting Picks of the Week

Monday, August 13

Arizona at Texas (8:05pm ET)

  • Projected Pitching Matchup: Zack Greinke (12-7, 2.89 ERA) (ARI) vs Bartolo Colon (6-10, 5.18 ERA) (TEX)
Zack Greinke has not allowed more than two earned runs in a start since June 18, but he’s had tough luck in his last two starts, in which he has thrown 13 combined innings, permitting just three earned runs on seven hits, but a combination of poor run support and bullpen implosions have brought him losses in both decisions. He has put up a 1.26 ERA in his last five starts combined, over 35 ⅔ innings. His counterpart is Bartolo Colon, who set the record for wins by a Latin American-born player in his last start last week against Seattle. He has permitted at least four earned runs in each of his last four starts, and it was an 11-run outburst from the Texas offense that brought him the win against the Mariners. The Diamondbacks are hitting the ball hard, and Greinke has the stuff to mow down the Texas offense. MLB Betting Prediction: Arizona 5, Texas 2

Tuesday, August 14

Cleveland at Cincinnati (7:10pm ET)

  • Projected Pitching Matchup: Corey Kluber (14-6, 2.74 ERA) (CLE) vs Sal Romano (7-9, 4.94 ERA) (CIN)
Just one fat pitch let the Twins force Corey Kluber into a no-decision last week, as Jorge Polanco slammed a three-run home run in the sixth inning to tie the game at four. However, his two starts before that were textbook Kluber, as he threw a complete-game shutout against the Angels on August 4 and threw 7 ⅓ innings of five-hit, one-run ball against Detroit the start before that, picking up a pair of wins along the way. The Reds don’t bring much punch on offense, so he should have a fairly easy time lining up zeroes. Opposite Kluber, the Reds will start Sal Romano. He had a terrific outing against the Mets on August 7, throwing six innings and allowing just two hits and one earned run (although walking three). He has mixed spot starts and bullpen stints for the Reds this season, and the way the Tribe is hitting the ball, I see Cleveland rolling here. MLB Betting Prediction: Cleveland 6, Cincinnati 1

Wednesday, August 15

San Francisco at L.A. Dodgers (10:10pm ET)

  • Projected Pitching Matchup: Derek Holland (6-8, 3.97 ERA) (SF) vs Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-0, 2.12 ERA) (LA)
Despite permitting eight earned runs in his last 16 ⅔ innings over three combined starts, Derek Holland has seen the team win each of them, picking up a victory for himself against Pittsburgh on August 10, in a 13-10 barnburner. However, the Giants have lost six of the last nine games in which he has appeared, although three of those appearances came out of the bullpen. The Dodgers will start Hyun-Jin Ryu, who makes just his seventh start of the season, and his first since May 2, as he returns from a stint on the disabled list. He faced the Giants on April 27, permitting a pair of earned runs on two solo shots while striking out seven. However, on May 2 he went on the disabled list and just now returns. I see Ryu having some rust after that time on the shelf, and the Giants taking enough advantage to win. MLB Betting Prediction: San Francisco 5, Los Angeles 4
