Updated NBA Championship Odds – February 20th

Written by on February 20, 2018

We’re about two-thirds of the way through the 2017-18 NBA regular season, and we’re coming out of the All-Star break on Thursday night, so it’s a good time to look at the updated odds for each of the 30 teams to hoist the Larry O’Brien Trophy at the end of the postseason as champions of the Association. Golden State remains the overall favorite, but the Cleveland Cavaliers have made things interesting by trading six players away at the deadline — and winning two games against contenders afterward. Check out the latest NBA Championship odds for each team to win in 2018

Updated NBA Championship Odds – February 20th

Golden State

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (5-8)
The Warriors average 113.7 points per 100 possessions, and if that holds up, that will be an NBA record. Their defensive efficiency is just fifth overall, though, at 103.7, which is their worst rating during their four-year time at the top of the league. When Andre Iguodala has to be the big man (instead of Zaza Pachulia, that number goes up to 111.6 — and you don’t want your defensive efficiency rating going up. That makes them the worst team in the league. It’s definitely something they want to work on down the stretch run.

Houston

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (9-2)
The Rockets attempt 53.3% of their shots from downtown. If that trend continues, they will be the first NBA team to take more shots from behind the arc than inside it. Teams that live by the three tend to die by it, but that maxim seems to have gone by the wayside in the video-game scoring era of the last few seasons.

Cleveland

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (5-1)
The trades made the team younger and improved its defensive profile. Will that be enough to get them through to the Finals? We’ll see, but the team’s first road test in Boston came out perfectly.

Toronto (12-1)

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (12-1)
Over the Raptors’ last seven wins, six of them have come by 15 or more. When the bench unit is on the floor, they rate a +31.1. But can they put things together in the postseason? The sweep by Cleveland last year still has to hang over their heads.

Boston

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (16-1)
The Celtics have a scoring machine running point, and they have one of the best playmakers in the paint. However, they are just #21 in the NBA in offensive efficiency, and since the calendar turned to 2018, they rank #26 in shot quality according to Second Spectrum. In their last two games before the break, they permitted consecutive season highs in points to Cleveland and to the Clippers.

Oklahoma City

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (28-1)
The Thunder are in the top 10 in offensive and defensive efficiency. They have ranked sixth in the league in shot quality since the beginning of 2018, but they haven’t found consistency over any extended stretch since the arrival of Carmelo.

San Antonio

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (33-1)
Since the start of 2018, the Spurs are just 10-12 and have a big game in Cleveland this week. Their true shooting percentage has dropped this year, because the team is jacking up more shots inside the arc — but outside the paint, and the mid-range jumpers haven’t been falling.

Minnesota

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (50-1)
Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns have played more minutes than any other players in the league. That fatigue may be wearing them down, because the Wolves have the worst defense in the fourth quarter.

Milwaukee, Washington

  • 2018 NBA Championship Odds: (66-1)
When the Bucks fired Jason Kidd, they were 25th in defensive efficiency. Since then, they have elevated to second in the same statistic. Jabari Parker is looking solid while coming back from an extended injury, shooting 57% from the floor. Washington has been very creative when dealing with injuries. They had to put Tomas Satoransky in a starting lineup and run the team without a point guard — and that unit earned a +21.2 rating per 100 possessions.
