Clemson vs Boston College NCAA Football Week 11 Spread & Analysis

Written by on November 7, 2018

The 9-0 Clemson Tigers have outscored their last four opponents by a combined 240-36 after escaping Syracuse, 27-23, back on September 29. That has included a 63-3 win over Wake Forest, a 41-7 rout of North Carolina State, a 59-10 shellacking of Florida STate and a 77-16 humiliation of Louisville last Saturday. Now they head to Boston College and hope to avoid the sort of trap game that plagued them against Syracuse and Pitt the last two seasons. Boston College has won three in a row, taking down Louisville, Miami and Virginia Tech, the last of these coming last Saturday in a difficult road environment in Blacksburg. The Eagles have shown that they can score, but their defense has hung them out to dry on occasion. This is an immense challenge for the Eagles as they look to mount what would be a mammoth upset. Check out our NCAAF odds preview as you consider your wagering strategy.

Why should you bet on the Tigers?

Clemson got all kinds of offense against Louisville last week, with Trevor Lawrence throwing a pair of touchdowns. His favorite target was Travis Etienne, who caught eight passes for 153 yards and a score. Justyn Ross also had a touchdown pass, catching two balls for 74 yards. An even more impressive feature for Clemson last week was their defense, which held Louisville to just 16 points in the laugher. To be sure, Louisville’s offense has looked dreadful this season with the departure of quarterback Lamar Jackson to the NFL, but the job that Clemson did to remain focused is impressive. Clemson has covered the spread in each of their last four ACC games and in each of their last four November contests. They have covered in four of their last five road games and in four consecutive games overall. The only tests that the Tigers have really had included that Syracuse game, in which they lost Lawrence for much of the game after a big hit, and the opener against Texas A&M. With Alabama knocking out win after big win, Clemson also needs to make a statement in the College Football Playoff standings to stay at #2, and I see them staying focused on Saturday night.

Why should you put your money on the Eagles?

Boston College has lost to a couple of inconsistent programs this year in Purdue and North Carolina State. Their win over Virginia Tech featured an impressive performance from tailback AJ Dillon, who rumbled for 96 yards and a score. The passing game was somewhat thin as Anthony Brown only threw for 177 yards. In their losses, BC has shown an inconsistency on defense that would give Clemson considerable openings to score if they do not shore up those issues on Saturday night. BC has covered in 10 of their last 12 games on artificial turf and in 13 of their last 17 ACC games. At home, they have covered in four of their last five. They have shown a considerable amount of courage in their play this year, and it is just their inconsistency on defense that has kept them from running the table to this point. If you like the Eagles, you think that playing at home and the Clemson tendency to take their foot off the gas at the wrong time, particularly on the road, will come into play here.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I’ve been a huge fan of the BC resurgence this year, and their wins have been impressive. However, they don’t have the consistency to hang with the #2 team in the nation. While I expect them to play hard, particularly in the first half, I see Clemson pulling away and winning by a score of 38-20.
