Texas A&M vs Clemson 2019 College Football Week 2 Odds & Preview

Written by on September 5, 2019

Week 2 in college football gives us a rematch of one of the most terrific games from 2018, although a game that largely went under the radar. Clemson went into the locker room at halftime with a 21-6 lead, only for the Aggies to roar back within 28-26, lining up for a two-point conversion to tie. Luckily for Clemson, the conversion attempt failed, and Clemson won in the toughest game they faced all season long. The Aggies head to South Carolina this time, and they are the toughest opposition Clemson will face this season. If Clemson rolls to a big win, then you can punch the Tigers’ College Football Playoff ticket. However, if the Aggies can win, they could meet Alabama in October in a matchup of the nation’s top two teams. So check out our sports betting preview of this matchup before you lock in your wagers.

Why should you bet on the Aggies?

The size of this spread is a real mystery to me. The Aggies have a veteran quarterback in Kellen Mond, who threw for 430 yards and three touchdowns against Clemson’s ironclad defense a year ago. They have the athletes to keep up with Clemson’s team speed, and they have the defensive line to frustrate Clemson’s offensive front. On defense, the Aggies have a pair of tall, tough cornerbacks in Charles Oliver and Myles Jones. On offense, the Aggies have wideout Kendrick Rogers, who hauled in seven passes for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns in the matchup last year. In their opener, the Aggies rolled over Texas State 41-7. Mond went 19 for 27 for 194 yards and three scores (along with an interception). Isaiah Spiller and Jashuan Corbin ran for a combined 209 yards and a touchdown. Texas A&M has covered in 10 of their last 11 non-conference games in and in four of their last five overall. If you like the Aggies, then you see them hanging closer than three touchdowns in this one.

Why should you put your money on the Tigers?

Clemson got an iffy start from Trevor Lawrence in their win over Georgia Tech, as he threw for just one touchdown and two interceptions. Lawrence was the backup quarterback for Clemson when they played Texas A&M last year, but he came on in relief and went 5 for 9 for 93 yards and a score. Even if Lawrence has some issues again this week, Clemson also has Travis Etienne, who rumbled for 205 yards and three touchdowns against Georgia Tech, thanks to the interior O-line for Clemson, which just blew holes open against the Yellow Jackets. The Aggies may or may not have the linebackers to deal with the Clemson ground game on the second level. The Aggies did get three sacks against Texas State, but that’s an entirely different offensive line from what Clemson has. Clemson has covered in four in a row — and in six of seven the week coming after a win against the spread. The problem for me in this game is the line — I think Jimbo Fisher has the scheme and the talent to keep the Aggies closer than this, even though the game is in Death Valley. If you like Clemson, you see them having a juggernaut that is even better than the one they had last year. Yes, they routed Alabama in the national championship, but that was after a season of finding their way. We are still in the opening weeks here.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I like what Clemson brings, and I definitely see them as a College Football Playoff team and one of the two teams in the national championship, but I don’t think they have it with a point spread of this size. I predict a final score of Clemson 34, Texas A&M 24.
