Atlanta at Seattle NFL Lines & Expert Prediction for Week 11

Atlanta at Seattle NFL Lines & Expert Prediction for Week 11

Written by on November 17, 2017

The Seattle Seahawks and the Atlanta Falcons look like teams headed in two different directions as they prepare to square off on Monday Night Football. The Seahawks took a major blow last week; despite winning their game, they lost All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman for the season with a torn Achilles tendon. Given the issues that their defense has had with injuries, this could seriously damage their quest to win the NFC West. The Falcons broke out of a funk in which they had lost four of five by delivering a convincing 27-7 win over Dallas last Sunday. Take a look at this battle of NFC contenders as you consider your NFL lines for this weekend.

Why should you bet on the Falcons?

The Atlanta defense brought home eight sacks on Dak Prescott last week, against a Dallas line touted to be among the NFL’s best (although missing left tackle Tyron Smith). Six of those were from defensive Adrian Clayborn — and the Falcons held Dallas to just 233 yards in the game. They were able to load the box and bottle up the running game, and then get all over Prescott when he needed to throw the ball down the field. That kind of active, swarming play had been largely missing from the Falcons’ defense until last week. The Atlanta offense stormed back from an early 7-0 deficit to take that win last week. Matt Ryan had two touchdown passes in the second half, finding Justin Hardy and Austin Hooper. On the day, he went 22 for 29 for 215 yards and those two scores (as well as a pick). Davonta Freeman did go down with a concussion, but Tevin Coleman picked up the running game slack, gaining 83 yards on 20 attempts with a touchdown. Coleman looks to be the featured back with Freeman in the concussion protocol. If Julio Jones can find ways to get open against the depleted Seattle secondary, the Falcons could roll to a big win.

Why should you put your money on the Seahawks?

Seattle looked like they were about to lose to the Arizona Cardinals last week, but then Russell Wilson made a sparkling play. He was in trouble in the backfield but avoided several defenders who would have sacked him and threw a 20-yard ball to Doug Baldwin on the sideline. Baldwin then rumbled down to the two-yard line, and the Seahawks punched it in for a late score — which they needed, because Arizona scored with 20 seconds left to cut the deficit to six. Wilson had a big day, going 22 for 32 for 238 yards and two scores. However, the rushing game is a problem, as they only gained 75 yards on 23 attempts. Are the Seahawks a safe bet in Week 11? The Seattle defense suddenly looks fairly vulnerable as well. They were unable to keep the Cardinals from driving late — and Arizona is featuring backup quarterback Drew Stanton, with Carson Palmer gone with a broken arm. The Legion of Boom was already missing safety Earl Thomas, and when Sherman went down — and then Kam Chancellor, with a stinger — the secondary was in tatters. Thomas and Sherman are not expected to play this week, and Chancellor remains questionable. Seattle will need to make some adjustments on defense against an Atlanta offense that may be finding its mojo again.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

I have a hard time picking against Seattle at home. However, with all of those defensive injuries, Seattle is really in trouble against Atlanta — and the Seahawks’ offense had a hard time against an Arizona team that is really struggling. I predict a final score of Atlanta 24, Seattle 20. Until Seattle has a full secondary, they will have a hard time staying with Los Angeles in their division.
