Lions vs Packers 2019 NFL Week 6 Lines & Game Analysis

Written by on October 9, 2019

The Green Bay Packers and Detroit Lions will meet on Monday night for the 180th time, a rivalry that dates all the way back to 1930, when the Lions were known as the Portsmouth Spartans. The Packers rolled in that first meeting, 47-13, but the Lions have won the last four in a row, including a 31-0 shellacking last December. However, Green Bay has gone through a major resurgence so far this season, including a 34-24 win over Dallas this past week that was not nearly as close as the score indicates, as the Cowboys picked up some points in garbage time in the fourth quarter. Green Bay is 4-1, with their lone loss coming at home against the Eagles on September 26. Detroit is 2-1-1, having followed up an ugly tie in Week 1 with wins over the Chargers and Eagles, as well as a four-point loss against Kansas City. Can Detroit make it five wins in a row in this rivalry? Or will Green Bay move to 5-1 on the season? We have your NFL betting preview right here.

Why should you bet on the Lions?

Detroit comes out of the bye week to face the Packers; they have had two weeks to think about that late comeback they yielded to the Chiefs. They took a 30-27 lead with 2:26 remaining in the fourth period on a touchdown pass from Matthew Stafford to Kenny Golladay. However, the Lions’ defense could not stop the Chiefs as they went 79 yards for the winning touchdown. In addition to the Lions’ competitive game, another bright spot was tailback Kerryon Johnson, who ran the ball 26 times (a career high) for 125 yards (a season high).

The defense also played spirited ball for the Lions — despite yielding 34 points and that game-winning drive. Patrick Mahomes II was not able to complete a touchdown pass against the Lions, and if they can keep him from throwing touchdowns, they could have similar success against Green Bay. In the red zone, Detroit’s defense has permitted just four touchdown passes and an opposing quarterback completion rate of just 55.4 percent.

Why should you put your money on the Packers?

Green Bay has dominated the Lions overall during the Aaron Rodgers era, winning 13 of 18 matchups — despite losing the last four meetings. In three of those four games, Rodgers either missed the whole game (as he sat out most of 2017 with a broken collarbone) or some of the game (as he was knocked out of the December matchup with a concussion). In the first matchup last year, Rodgers threw for 442 yards and three scores but also fumbled twice as Green Bay turned the ball over three times. Overall, though, Rodgers has found plenty of room down the field against the Detroit defense.

Rodgers is not the only dangerous player in the Green Bay offense. Tailback Aaron Jones carried the ball 19 times for 107 yards, scoring four touchdowns in the win over Dallas. Nine different Packers had receptions in the win over Dallas. The Packer defense has also contributed this season, with a +7 turnover margin on the season. They picked off quarterback Dak Prescott three times, giving them seven picks so far in 2019 — the same number they had in all of 2018.

Final Score Prediction

The Matthew Stafford era in Detroit has offered plenty of promise — but no real progress in terms of becoming a contender. Their recent success against the Packers has had more to do with Rodgers’ injuries than anything else — although they were able to mount heavy pressure in the first game last year. That will be the key for Detroit. However, the Packers have an added dimension in Aaron Jones that they did not have last year, and their defense is stouter this year. I predict a final score of Green Bay 31, Detroit 20.
