Updated 2018 Stanley Cup Odds – February 21st

Written by on February 21, 2018

Now that fewer than 30 games remain in the 2017-18 NHL regular season, the playoff races are tightening up, and some teams that had started out hot are sinking — while others who had started out struggling are climbing the standings. That means there are a lot of questions to answer. Will the newfound defense that Boston has shown in the second half of the season stick around for the playoffs? Will Ben Bishop stop getting yanked from starts in goal for Dallas? Are the Philadelphia Flyers for real this season? Let’s take a look at the Stanley Cup odds for each of the 31 franchises to bring home the Stanley Cup at the end of the season.

Updated 2018 Stanley Cup Odds – February 21st

Tampa Bay

  • 2018 Stanley Cup Odds: (6/1)
The Lightning’s only glaring weakness is their penalty kill unit, which ranks #24 in the league. On the whole, they score in bunches, and their defense is stout. They’ve gone 8-5 since January 20, but nine of those 13 games have been on the road, so that clip is still more than impressive.

Vegas

  • 2018 Stanley Cup Odds: (7/1)
This contender with no stars continues to impress observers throughout the NHL. Their penalty kill is mediocre, ranked #15 overall, and you don’t want to give up power play goals in the postseason. The lack of a playmaker is a worry for this team, because things get tougher in the postseason. However, that’s also when your no-name players emerge at just the right time, which could be perfect for these Golden Knights.

Boston, Nashville, Pittsburgh

  • 2018 Stanley Cup Odds: (8/1)
If the Bruins can snag Ryan McDonagh at the trade deadline, Boston might end up with the best group of blueliners in the whole league. Add that to a smoking offense, and you’ve got a real contender. Nashville made it all the way to the Stanley Cup Finals from the second wild card in the West last year, but they won’t be sneaking up on anyone this season. They could use another scorer on their second line. In Pittsburgh, Evgeni Malkin is the big reason behind their February surge, as he has 34 points in 21 games during 2018.

Washington

  • 2018 Stanley Cup Odds: (12/1)
Why isn’t this team ahead of Pittsburgh in the odds? Because Washington has gained a reputation as a team that can’t get the job done in the playoffs, even when their talent is superior. There’s only one way to combat that — win in the second season.

New Jersey, Philadelphia, Toronto, Winnipeg

  • 2018 Stanley Cup Odds: (16/1)
The Maple Leafs have won 8 of their last 10, and two of those wins were absolute dismantlings of Tampa Bay and Columbus. They did lose to Pittsburgh, but everyone’s been doing that lately. This young team looks like the real deal. Winnipeg had a huge overtime win over Washington thanks to a pair of tallies from Mark Scheifele, who has put up eight points in five games since coming back from an upper-body injury. The Flyers have lost their two top goalies to injury, so they added Petr Mrazek from Detroit. Can he hold the fort for a surging squad? New Jersey hasn’t been playing well as lately, struggling to put together enough offense to stay in games.

Dallas, N.Y. Islanders, St. Louis

  • 2018 Stanley Cup Odds: (20/1)
No one trusts the Dallas defense, even with the upgrade in goal with Bishop. No one questions their ability to score, but you’re not going to win a lot of 7-5 games in the postseason. The same goes for the Islanders, who can score with anyone but give up way too many bad goals. The Blues have the opposite problem — they have a speedy defense, but occasionally the offense simply disappears.
