The Toronto Maple Leafs have emerged as a force in the Eastern Conference thanks to the work of Mike Babcock. However, they have washed out of the playoffs in the first round each of the last two seasons. The addition of All-Star forward John Tavares in free agency has been seen as the move that will make them a true contender, which is why they have shot up the odds tables. The other Leaf forwards are William Nylander, Mitchell Marner and Auston Matthews, which makes for plenty of offense. The Tampa Bay Lightning sit as the co-favorites, thanks to their own talented forward group that includes Steven Stamkos and Nikita Kucherov, and Victor Hedman leads a talented group on the blue line. Goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy is one of the elite netminders in all of hockey. Erik Karlsson could bring his defensive talents to Florida as well, which would shore up a major problem for them — depth on the blue line.

The St. Louis Blues just finished outside the top eight in the Western Conference a year ago. However, they added Pat Maroon, Tyler Bozak and Ryan O’Reilly to an exciting offense that already included Jaden Schwartz, Brayden Schenn and Vladimir Tarasenko. The top defender is Alex Pietrangelo — the the Blues don’t have a lot of blue line depth. Then there are the Nashville Predators, who still have one of the top defensive units in the league, and one of the top goalies in Pekka Rinne. The management has been willing to go out and get big names at the deadline, such as Filip Forsberg, Kyle Turris, Ryan Johansen and Ryan Hartman. Rookie Eeli Tolvanen is expected to make major contributions in his first full year in the league, so they could zip to the top of the West and make the Cup Finals once again. If you want a really dark horse, consider the Arizona Coyotes. Derek Stepan is the biggest name on their offense, but they also have up-and-coming stars in Vinnie Hinostroza, Clayton Keller and Alex Galchenyuk, along with Christian Dvorak and Christian Fischer. They added Antti Raanta to play between the pipes, and it he continues to show consistency, the Coyotes could put together a couple of winning streaks that could propel them up the Pacific Division standings. Then there’s Carolina, with a new owner, general manager and head coach, and they also brought in Calvin de Haan and Dougie Hamilton to anchor a blue line that already had some solid young contributors. Andrei Svechnikov, taken with the draft’s second pick overall, is expected to make up for the hole on offense that the loss of Jeff Skinner created, and Martin Necas and Sebastian Aho are expected to find the back of the net as well.
