2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup Quarterfinals Odds & Betting Preview

Seven of the eight teams remaining in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup are European, with the lone exception coming from the United States. Quarterfinal matches begin on Thursday and run through Saturday. In the round of 16, Germany routed Nigeria, 3-0; Sweden edged Canada, 1-0; Italy eliminated China, 2-0, and the Netherlands escaped Japan, 2-1, on a controversial penalty in the waning minutes. Norway needed penalty kicks to send Australia home; England dispatched Cameroon, 3-0 (in a match that saw the Indomitable Lions stop playing twice after disputing referee decisions); France made it past Brazil, 2-1; and the United States needed a pair of penalty shots to get past Spain, 2-1. We have your 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup quarterfinals round schedule as well as sports betting thoughts on each match.

Norway vs England (3:00pm ET, FOX)

Norway’s win over Australia could be viewed as an upset, delivering physical play throughout and generating 27 shots, to just 20 for Australia (8-4 on goal). Isabell Herlovsen has now scored in two straight matches for Norway, as the side looks to make it to the semis for the first time in 12 years. England possessed for 63 percent of their win over Cameroon, launching just seven shots but putting three on goal (and all three into the net). Ellen White leads the Three Lionesses with three goals in this World Cup and has 32 international goals. The English side wins by controlling the ball, and if they open up the pace here, they could win. Norway has the better results so far in this tournament, and I like the value. Final Score Prediction: Norway 2, England 1

France vs United States (3:00pm ET, FOX)

France might not have made it to the quarterfinals at all if Amandine Henry hadn’t scored in the 106th minute of their round of 16 match against Brazil. Of course, Valerie Gauvin had a goal taken away in the first half that many think should have counted. Even so, France is on a nine-match winning streak and has put up two or more goals in 13 of their last 15 games. The United States survived a tough challenge from Spain, who committed 17 fouls and possessed for 46 percent of the game. The United States benefited from a borderline penalty call in the waning minutes. This team has never been eliminated from a World Cup game before the medal rounds, but this is a tough test. France won a January friendly, 3-0, and a 2017 friendly, 3-0, and the two teams drew 1-1 in a 2018 friendly. In the 2016 Olympics, the United States edged France, 1-0. Both teams have attacking capabilities and can score, but I see the American edge with experience pushing them to the semifinals. Final Score Prediction: United States 3, France 2

Italy vs Netherlands (9:00am ET, FS1)

Italy’s win over China put them in the Women’s World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in 28 years. Both sides put five shots on goal, but the Italian looks were better as they played more aggressive offense. They have at least two goals in five of their last six matches, and keeping on the attack is a must for Le Azzurre. The Netherlands advanced to the quarterfinals for the first time with their win over Japan. They have won seven matches in a row — although Japan did outplay them for much of the match and had a number of near misses. This is a deep team that just won the UEFA European Championship and the Algarve Cup, but they need more consistency to get past Italy. Final Score Prediction: Netherlands 2, Italy 1

Germany vs Sweden (12:30pm ET, FS1)

Germany has not permitted a single goal in their four matches in this World Cup, the only team with four clean sheets. They possessed for 60 percent of the match in their 3-0 rout of Nigeria, permitting just a single shot on goal. Sara Daebritz has scored in each of the last three matches. Sweden beat Canada despite losing the possession percentage, but their physicality produced the chances that they needed. Their defense is stout, but they will have a hard time knocking out Germany if they can’t generate more offense than they have. Final Score Prediction: Germany 2, Sweden 0
