2019 Gold Cup Semifinals Odds & Betting Prediction

The field of the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup is down to four teams after the quarterfinal rounds this weekend. Haiti came back from a 2-0 halftime deficit against Canada to win 3-2, the only real upset of the quarterfinal round. Mexico escaped a game Costa Rican side, advancing via penalty kicks (1-1, 5-4 PK). Jamaica benefited from the new handball rules and drew a late penalty against Panama, winning 1-0. The United States looked listless against Curacao in their quarterfinal, blowing multiple chances and needing a huge Zach Steffen save in the waning minutes to hold on for a 1-0 win. Now Haiti faces Mexico, while Jamaica takes on the United States for the third consecutive Gold Cup, with the winners headed to Sunday’s Gold Cup final. We have thoughts about both of the 2019 Gold Cup semifinals matchups for soccer betting enthusiasts.

Haiti vs Mexico (in Phoenix) (10:30pm ET, FS1 / Fox Sports GO)

The last time Haiti and Mexico faced off was way back in 2009, when they met in a CONCACAF Gold Cup match, and El Tri routed Haiti, 4-0. That was ten years ago, though, and despite these huge odds favoring Mexico, this Haitian side is much better, with four wins in four Gold Cup matches. Their comeback win against Canada was particularly impressive, as they launched 16 shots, putting five on target, despite possessing just 35 percent of the game. That means that they have beaten two of the top teams in the tournament, with a win over Costa Rica already in the bag. Mexico looked strong against Costa Rica despite the fact that they could not muster as much offense as they needed. They got the early goal from Raul Jimenez, leading 1-0 at halftime, but then Costa Rica drew a penalty in the second half to draw level, and matters went to penalty kicks. The kicks also went to sudden death after the two sides were level after the first four rounds of the shootout. Mexico has scored 14 goals in this tournament — but just one in the knockout rounds. They have the defense to stop Haiti, but Haiti is on a roll. If you like Mexico here, you see them having the strength and experience to move on to the final. Final Score Prediction: Mexico 2, Haiti 1

United States vs Jamaica (in Nashville, TN) (9:30pm ET, FS1 / Fox Sports GO)

The United States has posted clean sheets in all four matches so far at this year’s Gold Cup, including a shaky 1-0 win over Curacao in the quarterfinal. West McKennie put home a header in the 25th minute, and that goal was enough. There were several other points where Christian Pulisic and Gyasi Zardes had some tantalizing chances that slipped away, and midfielder Michael Bradley provided some outstanding service forward — but found himself a step behind some of the Curacao players, particularly in the waning minutes. Goalkeeper Zach Steffen stood tall for the United States. Jamaica only permitted two shots on goal in their win over Panama. As we mentioned earlier, they scored on a penalty, as Darren Mattocks knocked home a penalty in the 75th minute. Jamaica played a swarming defensive style but had trouble corralling the ball on offense, making their finishes somewhat chaotic. Even though the Reggae Boyz only possessed for 39 percent of the game, they were able to walk away with the win. They look to avenge their loss to the United States in the 2017 Gold Cup final — and reprise their win over the Red, White and Blue in the 2015 semifinal. Final Score Prediction: United States 2, Jamaica 1
