Fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina eliminated 16th-seeded Johanna Konta in the first quarterfinal match in the women’s draw at the 2019 US Open, rolling to a 6-4, 6-4 win. Svitolina is the highest seed remaining in the tournament, as she and eight-seeded Serena Williams are the only players from the top 12 seeds remaining in the women’s draw. We have tennis betting thoughts on each of the three remaining quarterfinals tilts from Flushing Meadows.

#8 Serena Williams vs #18 Wang Qiang

Wang Qiang delivered a huge upset in the round of 16, eliminating Ashleigh Barty in straight sets, winning primarily with her defense. Wang kept sending the ball back to Barty, and Barty responded by making too many errors to get the win. Wang won 67 percent of her service points and did not yield any breaks. Now she gets another elite opponent in Williams. Williams won 90 percent of her service points in her round of 16 match, rolling over Petra Martic in straight sets. This win was all about power, as Wiliams also broke Martic three times. The U.S. Open has always been one of Williams’ best tournaments, and her loss in the finals to Naomi Osaka had such controversy attached to it that Williams has to have a giant chip on her shoulder in the bracket this year. Now that Osaka is out, it’s hard to see Williams’ momentum slowing any before the finals. US Open Women’s Quarterfinals Prediction: Williams wins in straight sets

#13 Belinda Bencic vs #23 Donna Vekic

Bencic also delivered a mammoth upset in the round of 16, eliminating top seed Naomi Osaka. Bencic won 73 percent of her service points and converted three of seven break opportunities while only facing one break point herself. Bencic has now beaten top-ten players nine times this year, a career best for one calendar year. Bencic is in a Grand Slam quarterfinal for the first time in five years — also at Flushing Meadows. Vekic needed three sets to knock off Julia Goerges in the round of 16, needing 34 games to advance. Vekic won 63 percent of her service points and broke Goerges four times, in 12 total break point opportunities. Vekic actually lost the opening set in a tiebreaker before roaring back to win the match, saving two break points in the third set. Vekic has won six of her last nine matches that went to three sets, and she has won four in a row for the first time since the Nottingham tournament. Bencic has won two of the three matches between the two, including their only hardcourt match five years ago. Vekic won the last matchup, though, at the French Open. I like the momentum that Bencic has here, though. US Open Women’s Quarterfinals Prediction: Bencic wins in three sets

#15 Bianca Andreescu vs #25 Elise Mertens

We were touting Andreescu as someone who could make a deep run at this tournament, and she’s still standing in the round of eight. She beat Taylor Townsend in the round of 16 in three sets. Particularly impressive was Andreescu’s receiving game, as she won half of her receiving points, leading to six breaks. Andreescu did waver a bit on her service, winning only 77 percent of her service games, but she is still standing. She won the Rogers Cup before the U.S. Open, so she has plenty of momentum coming in. It helps, of course, that a lot of the big names in her quarter of the draw had already lost. Mertens beat Kristie Ahn in straight sets in the round of 16 to make the quarterfinals. Mertens only lost two games in the entire match and won 59 percent of her receiving points, which explains the five breaks she delivered. Mertens has not dropped a set in any of the first four rounds, but now she has the first real test of her draw to this point in Andreescu. Mertens has the edge in experience here, but Andreescu has had the better form as of late. I see Andreescu picking up one more big win here. US Open Women’s Quarterfinals Prediction: Andreescu wins in three sets.
