2019 Wimbledon Quarterfinals Betting Preview

Written by on July 8, 2019

There are only 16 players remaining in the men’s and women’s draws going into play July 9, as the round of 16 will have come and gone. We have picked two matches from the quarterfinal rounds for your sports betting consideration. Simona Halep ended the Cinderella run of Coco Gauff — can she keep focus against Chinese phenom Zhang Shuai? On the men’s side, Sam Querrey meets Rafael Nadal. Querrey won the last time these two met, but he has a reputation for folding under pressure. Can he get that monkey off his back, or will Nadal win again? Don’t miss our 2019 Wimbledon quarterfinals betting preview.

2019 Wimbledon Quarterfinals Betting Preview

Women’s Draw

Zhang Shuai vs Simona Halep (8:00am ET) Zhang Shuai, China’s biggest name in tennis right now, has advanced to the quarterfinals of Wimbledon. Now she will meet Romanian star Simona Halep. Shuai has had a solid tournament thus far and eliminated Dayana Yastremska in three sets. Shuai’s biggest strength in this match was in receive of serve, as she won 56 percent of her receiving points, breaking Yastremska in five different games. However, Shuai’s own serve was a sore point, as she was broken for times. With wins over such names as Caroline Wozniacki on her resume at this point, though, Shuai should enter the quarterfinals with confidence. Simona Halep brought the exciting run of Cori “Coco” Gauff to an end, beating the terrific 15-year-old in straight sets. It was Halep’s defense that won the day, as she brought pressure against Gauff’s serve and broke her five times. Halep also picked up a big win against Azarenka during the third round, so she should also come into this match with plenty of confidence. Given the difference in experience at this level of the game, it’s hard to pick against her. It is true that Shuai has won two of the three matches with Halep, with Shuai rolling over her in straight sets in their last meeting in 2016. However, Halep is playing better now than she was three years ago and I see her winning here. Wimbledon Betting Prediction: Halep wins in three sets

Men’s Draw

Sam Querrey vs Rafael Nadal

Sam Querrey made it to the quarterfinal by taking down Tennys Sandgren, needing 48 games to eliminate him in four sets. Querrey won 83 percent of his first serve points and 60 percent on second serve, getting two-thirds of his first serves in play. He was pushed to break point four times but saved each one, and he delivered 25 aces. That gives him 78 aces in his last three matches — and just one service break. If Querry can get by Nadal, he would make his second Wimbledon semifinal. He has reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam three times, losing twice and winning once. He has 21 career victories of players in the top ten — but just one in 2019. On grass, Querrey has been on a roll, winning seven of eight matches. Rafael Nadal only needed 24 games to eliminate Joao Sousa in the round of 16. He delivered 30 winners and did not face any break points. He won 86 percent of his first serve points and 69 percent on second serve, winning 79 percent of his total service points. In this year’s Wimbledon, he has won 12 out of 13 sets. He has made the semifinals of five straight Grand Slam tournaments and looks to advance to the semifinals at Wimbledon for the seventh time. In the quarterfinals of Grand Slams, Nadal has gone 17-3 in his last 20, and he has a four-match winning streak going on grass. These two have met five times, with Nadal winning four times — but Querrey won the last time they played, beating Nadal in straight sets at Acapulco in 2017. This will be the first time the two have met on grass. Querrey has the serve to win this match — and he has had success against Nadal. However, Nadal gets stronger the later he goes in Grand Slam brackets — and Querrey has had a hard time finishing under the klieg lights of pressure. It’s hard to argue against Nadal here. Wimbledon Betting Prediction: Nadal wins in three sets
