2019 Wimbledon Round 3 Betting Preview

If you like upsets, then you love Wimbledon so far in 2019. Unseeded Reilly Opelka sent Stan Wawrinka home in the second round, needing five sets to win, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6, 6-4, 8-6. That really was not all that much of a surprise; despite his three Grand Slam victories, Wawrinka has not made it past the second round at Wimbledon since 2015. Cori “Coco” Gauff continued her incredible Wimbledon story in the second round. After she beat her tennis idol, Venus Williams, in the opening round, she won again in the second, sending home Magdalena Rybarikova, a former Wimbledon semifinalist, in straight sets. She is the youngest player, at 15, to get to the third round since 1991 — when Jennifer Capriati did it, and Capriati made it to the semifinals. How far can Coco go? We have Wimbledon betting thoughts about the third round action from the All England Tennis Club.

Men’s Draw

Friday, July 5

  • Karen Khachanov vs Roberto Bautista-Agut (7:30am ET)
Karen Khachanov eliminated Feliciano Lopez in four sets in the second round, winning 82 percent of his first serve points and 53 percent of his second serve points, converting on four of his ten break points while saving eight of his own 10 break points. His serve was terrific, as he landed 10 aces, and his serve could take him a long way. He has already needed to play six hours of tennis to win the first two rounds, though, so that could take a toll over time. He has won five of his last seven matches on grass. Roberto Bautista-Agut eliminated Steve Darcis in straight sets, needing just 23 games to win. He won 80 percent of his first serve points and 58 percent of his second serve points, converting four of ten break points and cruising without facing a break point on his own, needing just over 90 minutes to win. He has only played three hours of tennis so far, taking a lot less wear and tear on those legs. He has also won five of seven on grass. The two have met five times, with Bautista-Agut winning three, but Khachanov prevailed this year when they met in Rome, while Bautista-Agut has won the only match on grass, in 2018 at Halle. Given the ease Bautista-Agut has had so far, I like him to win. Wimbledon Round 3 Betting Prediction: Bautista-Agut wins in four sets

Women’s Draw

Friday, July 5

  • Polona Hercog (+109) vs Cori “Coco” Gauff (-133) (11:15am ET)
We’ve already gone over Coco’s performance at Wimbledon so far, but it is worth noting that, in her win over Magdalena Rybarikova, she converted 74 percent of her first serves and won 76 percent of her service points, winning all of her service games. That shows considerable confidence for a player of her age and has played a major role in her success to this point. She also won three return games in breezing to that straight-sets victory. Polona Hercog beat Madison Keys in the second round, rolling in straight sets as she broke Keys four times. Hercog won 82 percent of her service points and 89 percent of her service games. She has won several WTA titles in her career. This is their first meeting at a WTA event. Given the struggles that Hercog has shown on grass, though, I see Gauff rolling again. Wimbledon Round 3 Betting Prediction: Gauff wins in three sets
