Top Tennis Betting Picks of the Week – May 28th Edition

Written by on May 28, 2018

The focus of the pro tennis world is on Paris this week again, as Roland-Garros enters its second week. This is the pro tennis major played on clay courts, which means that the pace of the ball slows down a bit, making rallies last longer and altering the way the ball responds when it strikes the ground. We have three matches from this week for you to consider as you put together your tennis betting for the next few days.

Roland-Garros, Round of 128

(28) Maria Sharapova vs Richel Hogenkamp (12:40pm ET) Maria Sharapova made it all the way to the semifinals at the Rome Masters, giving her a terrific season on clay so far this year. However, she doesn’t appear to have the same killer tennis she has had in previous years, as a lot of her matches are extending to three sets — as her second serve percentage and her unforced errors are causing her more problems than they need to. Even so, she hasn’t lost an opening-round match in a Grand Slam since the 2010 Australian Open. Richel Hogenkamp has won just once in five matches on the main tour this year, dropping 10 of 15 matches overall. She has advanced to the second round in three of her five appearances at Grand Slam events, including a straight-sets win over Jelena Jankovic at Roland-Garros a year ago. However, she has lost three of her last four matches on clay, and she lost to Sharapova the only time she faced her, at Wimbledon in 2015, when Sharapova won in straight sets. Tennis Betting Prediction: Sharapova wins in straight sets

Roland-Garros, Round of 128

(3) Marin Cilic vs James Duckworth (5:00am ET) Marin Cilic comes in with a 16-8 record in matches this year, and he advanced to the semis at the Rome Masters, using his first serve to roll through opponents. He has a reputation for making deep runs at Grand Slams — so long as he can limit his unforced errors. He made it to the quarterfinals at Roland-Garros a year ago, so he should have confidence again this year. He has won five of his last eight matches on clay. James Duckworth has fought through a number of injuries and has come through foot surgery to appear at Roland-Garros — his first match on clay since his appearance here in 2015. He has only played three matches since the 2017 Australian Open and just one match on the main tour during that time. So you can expect to see some significant rust when he takes the court against Cilic. He is 4-4 in his last eight matches on clay, but this is definitely a baptism by fire in his return to a Grand Slam. Tennis Betting Prediction: Cilic wins in straight sets

Roland-Garros, Round of 64

Jared Donaldson vs (4) Grigor Dimitrov (5:00am ET) Grigor Dimitrov, the fourth seed on the men’s draw, rolled over Mohamed Salvat in straight sets in his first game. Dimitrov carried 88 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points, taking just one service break along the way. The problem that Dimitrov showed in the match was an unsightly 28 unforced errors, keeping Salvat closer in the second set than he needed to. Dimitrov is 4-4 in his last eight matches on clay. He’ll face Jared Donaldson, who needed five sets to dispatch Nicolas Jarry. Donaldson committed 23 unforced errors — but over five sets, instead of three. He won 76 percent of his first serve points and 59 percent of his second serve points. Donaldson has advanced to the third round of a Grand Slam in two previous tournaments, but he is still just 2-5 in his last seven matches on clay courts. Tennis Betting Prediction: Dimitrov wins in straight sets
