Updated Masters Odds: PGA Betting Preview

The 85th edition of the Masters is getting closer and closer, and one phenomenon that has emerged in recent weeks to alter the sports betting landscape is the performance of Jordan Spieth. His last two months of golf have rivaled the excellence of his early days in the sport, when he shocked the PGA with three wins in majors in relatively quick succession. After that, his quality of play (particularly his putting) fell off, but his win at the Valero Texas Open this past weekend has him vaulting up the odds list when it comes to picking the winner of this year’s turn at Augusta.

Check out the updated Masters odds for contenders as well as our thoughts about Spieth and some other top players.

Jordan Spieth last won a tournament all the way back in 2017, at the British Open, and finishing on Sunday in San Antonio showed that, mentally, he has exorcised many of the demons that plagued him between now and then. If his putter is just as rock-solid at Augusta, then he will be hard to beat.

Dustin Johnson comes in as the defending champion, and only three players (Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo and Tiger Woods) have ever pulled off the back-to-back green jacket. Johnson would make an intriguing fourth, and this time around there will be a lot more fans cheering him on than there were just five months ago.

Justin Thomas just won The Players Championship for the first time, so you would not want to overlook his solid play. He does not offer a lot of value, but given his ranking and that recent title, you wouldn’t expect to get much from wagering on him.

Brooks Koepka had knee surgery just 20 days ago, but he still plans to play the Masters. He had slipped and fallen in March, dislocating his right kneecap, and had surgery on the 16th to reattach a ligament and remedy other damage in the area. He played an abbreviated practice round on Monday, playing four holes, after taking 47 balls on the driving range and putting 33 more. Can he really pull off the win?

Bryson DeChambeau appears to be poorly valued on this list — but not in a way that wagers can take advantage of. His performance history at Augusta has not been all that solid, despite his mammoth drives, and so taking him at +1100 is not the best use of your wagering money.

Patrick Cantlay is a player who looks a bit undervalued, though. It’s true that he did not advance from pool play at WGC-Austin, but there were flashes of brilliance in his play. If you think about Collin Morikawa’s brilliant play at the PGA a year ago and his continued run of excellence, he seems like a potential value wager as well. Webb Simpson has a major win on his resume, along with a Players title. At his last two appearances in the Masters, he has cracked the top ten each time. He is also one of the top iron players on the planet, and Augusta is a course that rewards solid iron play. Sergio Garcia has a green jacket, and his last three months have been terrific. However, since his win at Augusta in 2017, he has failed to crack the top 20 at any major, and he has missed nine cuts among those starts.
