Stringing together three wins in a row is extremely difficult in MotoGP, and the fact that the next two riders on the odds list all race for Ducati suggest the possibility of a strategy to push one of them past Marquez. Danilo Petrucci is another strong candidate, after pulling off a terrific win at Mugello. Marquez profited last week from a risky decision to change to slick tires sooner than the rest of the group did, and the advantage that gave him in those conditions was a significant one. The Honda that he rides is superb with respect to acceleration, and the improvement in terms of top speed in their 2019 engines has given him yet another advantage. In years past, the Ducatis had the advantage with respect to power and top speed, but Honda has closed that gap. Those changes have made Marquez a week-in, week-out competitor against the likes of the Ducati riders, a change from seasons past. The best hope for Dovizioso is to change his mentality so that he pushes more aggressively, taking more risks than he has so far in 2019, because even if that means he wins some races while failing to finish some others because those decisions turn out to be major risks, he could climb the point standings — and get back into Marquez’s thoughts a little bit, heading into 2020. Jack Miller is another strong candidate after making his second podium of 2019 at Brno, and there was a time earlier this season when he was the only rider who could pull past Marquez. Cal Crutchlow is another interesting candidate, as his Honda has shown it can keep up with Ducatis this season. Alex Rins could struggle a bit. The Suzukis and Yamahas have not done as well as Honda and Ducati in Austria, but Rins did quite well at Brno. Valentino Rossi and Maverick Vinales are interesting choices, but the fact that this race spends so much time in the mountains could make life hard for the Yamahas, who pushed hard at Brno but may struggle with the extra elevation gain. Fabio Quartararo continues to have an excellent rookie season, leading Rookie of the Year by a wide margin at this point. However, his teammate, Franco Morbidelli, will be looking for redemption after being victimized with a crash in Brno, and the likes of Takaaki Nakagami and Aleix Espargaro will push him hard this week. Pol Espargaro is one of just two riders to put up points in each race in 2019 (along with Petrucci), and his manufacturer (KTM) is an Austrian company. After missing this race in 2018 due to injury, Espargaro should have plenty of motivation this time around.
