2019 Japan MotoGP Odds & Betting Preview

Half of the manufacturers that provide bikes for MotoGP call Japan home, making this one of the more intriguing stops in the MotoGP circuit. Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki build 10 of the 22 bikes that will race. This week, there will be no intrigue for the rider’s championship, as Marc Marquez clinched that title last week in Thailand. Here at the course in Motegi, Marquez can also wrap up the manufacturers’ championship if he beats everyone riding a ducati. The circuit itself is fairly simple, featuring a lot of similarities with Le Mans, with corners that are relatively slow and straights that provide challenges in terms of acceleration, putting a lot of wear on brakes and gear boxes. The average rider changes gears more than 40 times per lap, which means that more than a thousand shifts will take place over the course of a race. We have the MotoGP odds for you to consider as well as thoughts about the racers and the course.

Who’s the Favorite to Win the 2019 Japan MotoGP?

While Marc Marquez is the heavy favorite, the last two times he won the title before the end of the season, he did not even finish the next race, both in 2016 and in 2018. He would love to finish on the podium or even on the top, so that Honda can win the manufacturers’ championship on home soil. Reports have him in talks with Honda management about extending his deal two more years, through 2022, and this accomplishment would give him even more leverage in those negotiations. Marquez has proven to be the only rider who can manage the RC213V this season, so the other riders for Honda (Cal Crutchlow, Jorge Lorenzo and Takaaki Nakagami) are not likely to beat all of the Ducatis. Crutchlow has been the second best rider on the team this year, but Lorenzo has had a difficult time maintaining fitness after he fractured his wrist right before the start of the 2019 season. If Lorenzo can finish in the top ten here, he has a chance to avoid being replaced by Johann Zarco in 2020. Nakagami could use some rest from a shoulder injury, but he is a Japanese native, and his sponsors want to see him on the course. He will miss the last three races of the season to recover, so this will be his finale. He has ankle and shoulder injuries that have dogged him. The heavy braking zones here will be hard on his shoulder, so any success he has will come with even more courage than usual.

What about Andrea Dovizioso?

He claims that the Ducati bikes do well on courses that require a significant amount of braking. He won this race in 2017, but then he crashed with two laps remaining, and Marquez was able to escape with the win. This time there is little on the line except the manufacturers’ title, so you can expect a freer run out of Dovizioso. Danilo Petrucci made the podium here two years ago, but he has not raced well in the second half of 2019. This race will be cold, a factor that works well for Petrucci as he likes the extra grip on the track. Jack Miller has crashed in each of his three Japan MotoGP races, but he has made better decisions while racing in 2019, so he could be a surprise finisher on the podium.
