The Course

Nine Bridges runs 7,196 yards long and is a par-72 layout. The greens are bentgrass. Given that Nine Bridges is near a shore, weather can play havoc with the outcome. The wind roared at this tournament two years ago, and the scores were sky-high as a result; the course played as the fourth most difficult relative to par that year. In 2018, the wind was calmer, and the scores were much lower. The fairways are narrow, with trees lining the sides, which means that driving accuracy is paramount. However, when conditions are calm, birdies can be easy to come by. In 2018, the top five finishers had an average of over 7.5 strokes in birdies gained over the rest of the tournament field. There are four par-5 holes on the course, and given the lack of overall length on the course, golfers who excel in par-5 scoring average should be on your card: examples include the likes of Sungjae Im, Gary Woodland and Justin Thomas.

Hideki Matsuyama

Matsuyama does unusually well in tournaments that do not feature a cut. He won most recently at the World Golf Championship-Bridgestone Invitational in 2017 and he also has three top-five finishes at the Tournament of Champions, coming in as the runner-up in 2017. His striking is much better than his putting, but bentgrass greens favor him, as he is in the top 15 in this field in Strokes Gained: Putting on this surface over the last fifty rounds. He gained eight strokes tee-to-green at The Shriners Open a few weeks ago.

Tommy Fleetwood

Fleetwood is one of the best young golfers who has not yet won a tournament on the PGA Tour, simply because he has not been able to string together four consecutive solid rounds. He has been the runner-up at majors and World Golf Championships, so he is due for a win. He is 17th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green over his last three PGA Tour events, and he ranks third in par-5 scoring and sixth in stroke average in the European Tour this season.

Chez Reavie

Reavie has gained five strokes tee-to-green on average and sits at 22nd in birdies or better gained over his last three tournaments. He did miss the cut at the Shriners Open, but that would be a mistake, as Reavie cracked the top 15 at the CJ Cup two years ago and was in the top seven a year ago.
