Winning SU MLB Odds Favorites for the Weekend

Friday, June 23rd

Cincinnati at Washington (7:05pm ET, Luis Castillo vs Stephen Strasburg)

Where: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C. Radio:  WLW 700 (Cincinnati) / MASN (Washington) TV: FS-O (Cincinnati) / 106.7 The Fan (Washington) MLB Odds to Win Series: Nationals -300 / Reds +240 Cincinnati starts Luis Castillo, a minor-league call-up who has the unenviable task of taking on Nationals’ ace Stephen Strasburg in his debut. Strasburg only lasted 5 ⅓ innings in his last outing, permitting a pair of earned runs in a 7-4 win over the Mets. He did struggle against Atlanta before that, permitting six earned runs in five innings, but in his three starts before that, he threw 20 combined innings and permitted just three earned runs. I see Strasburg leading his team to a win.

Houston at Seattle (10:10pm ET, Joe Musgrove vs Felix Hernandez)

Where: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington Radio: KBME 790 (Houston) / 710 ESPN (Seattle) TV: ROOTSW (Houston) / ROOTNW (Seattle) MLB Odds to Win Series: Astros -145 / Mariners +125 Joe Musgrove has been a weak link in the Astros’ rotation his last two times out, permitting a combined seven earned runs in 10 ⅓ innings against Texas and Boston, a pair of losses. The Seattle offense is not as strong as the Rangers’ or the Red Sox, but the Mariners start Felix Hernandez in his return from the disabled list. Also, he made five starts before heading to the shelf, and only one of them was dominant. Given the Astros’ bats, I see them tagging Hernandez as he tries to shed the rust from his time off and he’s looking to get 100 pitches on Sunday. I see Houston winning in an offensive barnburner.

Saturday, June 24th

Minnesota at Cleveland (4:10pm ET, Kyle Gibson vs Corey Kluber)

Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, Ohio Radio: TIBN (Minnesota) / WTAM 1100 (Cleveland) TV: FSNO (Minnesota) / SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland) MLB Odds to Win Series: TBA The Tribe swept Minnesota on the road last weekend, and now the Twins return to try and climb back up over the Indians in the American League Central standings. Kyle Gibson pitched well for Minnesota his last time out, limiting Cleveland to three earned runs over six innings, but before that he gave up six earned runs in six innings to the Seattle Mariners. Meanwhile, Corey Kluber threw a complete-game shutout his last time out. I see Cleveland winning that pitchers’ duel. The Red Sox are favorites in the MLB odds to win the series against the Angels this weekend.

Los Angeles Angels at Boston (7:15pm ET, J.C. Ramirez vs David Price)

Where: Fenway Park, Boston, Massachusetts Radio: KLAA 830 (LA) / WCEC 1490 AM (Boston) TV: MLBN (out-of-market only), FOX (LA) / FOX (Boston) MLB Odds to Win Series: Red Sox -270 / Angels +220 JC Ramirez has not been a strong link in the Angels’ rotation lately. He did beat the Yankees back on June 13, 3-2, but in three of his last four starts, he has permitted 16 runs in 12 ⅓ innings, and he only lasted three innings in his last start against Kansas City on June 18. Maybe David Price has had his problems at Fenway, but I still see those Boston bats doing more damage to Ramirez than what Price will give up on Saturday night.

Sunday, June 25th

Philadelphia at Arizona (4:10pm ET, Jeremy Hellickson vs Zack Greinke)

Where: Chase Field, Phoenix, Arizona Radio: 94 WIP (Philadelphia) / KHOV 105.1 (Arizona) TV: CSN-P (Philadelphia) / FS-A (Arizona) MLB Odds to Win Series: Diamondbacks -360 / Phillies +290 Jeremy Hellickson has one of the better arms in the Philadelphia rotation, but Zack Greinke (8- 4, 3.14 ERA) has been earning his ace-level contract this year. The Philadelphia offense would have a difficult time competing in a Triple-A league this season, because of their combination of youth and a lack of talent. I see Greinke mowing down the Phillies and leading the Diamondbacks to a big win on Sunday.

Colorado at L.A. Dodgers (4:10pm ET, German Marquez vs Brandon McCarthy)

Where: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California Radio: SportsNet LA (Colorado) / 570 LA Sports (LA) TV: KOA 850 AM (Colorado) / SportsNet LA (LA) MLB Odds to Win Series: Dodgers -310 / Rockies +250 The Colorado Rockies and the Los Angeles Dodgers are in a battle at the top of the National League West standings. Marquez has pitched well his last two times out for the Rockies, permitting just a pair of earned runs in 11 combined innings and eight combined hits. LA starts Brandon McCarthy, who threw six shutout innings against the Mets and held the Indians to a single earned run in his start before that as the Dodgers rolled to a 6-4 win. I see McCarthy winning this pitchers’ duel and giving the Dodgers the edge on Sunday.
