Updated NCAA Basketball Championship Odds – February 21st

Written by on February 21, 2018

Will Kentucky make the NCAA basketball tournament or not? They picked up a big road win over Arkansas last night that will help their case — but their inconsistency has been off the charts this season. And what about Oklahoma? They are losing games left and right, most recently to Kansas (who seems to have secured a one-seed in the Big Dance, so long as they secure the Big 12 and do well in their conference tournament). Let’s take a look at the NCAA Basketball Championship odds of the major contenders for this year’s college men’s basketball tournament.

Updated NCAA Basketball Championship Odds – February 21st

Villanova

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (9-2)
The Wildcats had dropped two of three (including a mystifying loss to St. John’s at home), but then they went to Xavier and delivered a 16-point throttling of the Musketeers. They look like a team that can roll through the bracket once again, with speed and shooting inside complemented by tough rebounding and defense inside.

Michigan State

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (5-1)
The Spartans put a pig’s breakfast out there for their fans in the first half against Northwestern on Saturday, but then they roared back from a 27-point deficit to deliver the win. They need to beat Wisconsin to salt away the regular season title in the Big Ten.

Virginia

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (6-1)
With big wins over Duke and North Carolina — and a big win at Miami last week — the Cavaliers have picked up the top ranking in KenPom and RPI. Can they hold it together when the klieg lights of the Big Dance turn on?

Duke

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (7-1)
Since losing Marvin Bagley III, the Blue Devils have gone 3-0. Their decision to switch from man to zone on defense has worked well too. But how long can they keep up this quality of play without one of their key stars?

Xavier

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (10-1)
The Musketeers are in the top five with RPI. Can they get a one-seed in the tournament? They’ll need to knock off Villanova in the Big East tournament, or perhaps hope that some of the other major conferences have chaos in their tournaments.

Purdue

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (10-1)
Remember when we were all excited about the Boilermakers’ guard play? Well, they haven’t had more than eight three-balls in a game since near the end of January, which means they’re relying on their inside offense once again. That’s a big factor in their recent three-game slide.

Arizona

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (12-1)
Picking up a big road win against Arizona State gives the Wildcats the inside track to the regular season Pac-12 title. Which Rawle Alkins, though, can the team expect to see night in and night out?

Auburn, Texas Tech, Ohio State

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (16-1)
Losing to South Carolina on Saturday was tough for Auburn, but even tougher was the loss of sophomore forward Anfernee McLemore, who dislocated his ankle and fractured his tibia and will be on the shelf for at least four months. He was one of the elite interior defenders in the SEC. Texas Tech also had a difficult loss, coming at Baylor, but even more important is the status of Keenan Evans, who hurt his toe in the Baylor loss. The Red Raiders need his shot-creating ability. Ohio State lost at Penn State and then at Michigan — no thanks to Kam Williams, who put up just six points combined in those games after returning from his suspension.

Kansas, West Virginia, Cincinnati

  • 2018 NCAA Basketball Championship Odds: (20-1)
Cincinnati looks like they’re back to their old tricks of folding in the late winter and early spring, losing to Houston and Wichita State last week. Is “Press Virginia” wearing down again? They blew yet another lead of more than 10 points in the second half against Kansas. The Jayhawks look like they’ve calmed down, but their defensive lapses could haunt them in March.
