2017 College Football Odds for Total Season Wins

2017 College Football Odds for Total Season Wins

We’re about ten weeks away from Labor Day, which means we’re ten weeks from the opening week from betting on the 2017 college football season and we’re less than a month away from those media days in the middle of July. This means that it’s time for you to take a look at some of the bets that you can lay on futures for these programs — including total season wins. Right now, we’re going to take a look at some of the best bets that you can find with win totals, so that when the college football betting season winds down, you’ll have a bunch of extra money waiting for you around Christmas time.

2017 College Football Odds for Total Season Wins

Ohio State Buckeyes (College Football Odds: 10.5 — Over -120, Under EVEN)

First of all, Ohio State has hired a new offensive coordinator (Kevin Wilson from Indiana) and a new quarterbacks coach (Ryan Day) due to the aftermath of that 31-0 embarrassment that they suffered at the hands of Clemson in the national semifinal last year. Plus, J.T. Barrett returns at quarterback, with more accolades than perhaps any other signal-caller in the history of the Big Ten. Currently, they sit at #4 in the Sporting News’ early Top 25. So they look like they’ll start on a good spot.

How is the Buckeyes Schedule This Season?

Overall, Ohio State has a pretty easy Big 12 slate. They don’t have to see Wisconsin but they do play at Michigan and at Nebraska, but their other road conference games are Indiana and Rutgers, two bottom-feeders in the conference. They get Penn State and Michigan State at home. On the other hand, their toughest non-conference game is Oklahoma, at home, an opponent that they humiliated on the road last year — and the Sooners will have a new head coach. Depending on how Michigan does, this could easily be a 12-0 slate if Urban Meyer (61-6 in his Ohio State career) has rejuvenated his offense. I’d take the over here.

SMU Mustangs (College Football Odds: 5 – Over +105, Under -125)

Right now, I’d jump on this over. Why? Because this looks like one of those lines that is born of reputation rather than reality. Quarterback Ben Hicks returns for his sophomore season, and while his freshman season showed some growing pains, he was able to guide the offense by mid-season, leading most dramatically to a 38-16 rout of then-top 15 Houston at home. Wide receiver Courtland Sutton returns, and the Mustangs also have Xavier Jones and Braeden West in a solid backfield.

What about that defense?

They finally have the depth they need to compete for four quarters. Against Houston’s speedy Greg Ward Jr., SMU piled up seven sacks. Jordan Wyatt is predicted to finish as one of the top cornerbacks in the American Athletic Conference. The linebacker corps, led by Kyran Mitchell, is a little undersized, but they have the speed to catch up with opponents. SMU also don’t have to play AAC East powers Temple and South Florida, and their only tough non-conference opponent is TCU, with the other games against Stephen F. Austin, North Texas and Arkansas State. I’m definitely taking the over here. The Sooners are looking as favorites in the College Football odds.

Oklahoma Sooners (College Football Odds: 10 – Over +105, Under -125)

Oklahoma says goodbye to Bob Stoops, who leaves the bench with a legacy second only in Oklahoma lore to that of Barry Switzer. For this reason, the new head coach will keep the system going, as it is former offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley who will assume the top job — while Stoops goes upstairs and takes on an administrative role with the program. More importantly, Baker Mayfield returns, so the passing game should be strong, but the departure of Joe Mixon for the NFL means that the Sooners’ depth in the backfield will be tested.

Can the Sooners Succeed This Season?

Taking into account their schedule, with a trip to Ohio State in Week 2 on the schedule, along with trips to Baylor, Kansas State and Oklahoma State, there are plenty of land mines in the Sooners’ schedule — and don’t forget their game against Texas on October 14. Also, the Longhorns brought in Tom Herman from Houston — and Herman has brought big results wherever he has gone, most recently at Houston. So here, I’m going with the under.
