Indianapolis at Tennessee Week 6 NFL Odds & Monday Night Preview

Written by on October 13, 2017

A pair of AFC South foes tangle on Monday Night Football this week, as the Tennessee Titans prepare to welcome the Indianapolis Colts. Both squads sit at 2-3, as the Colts held off the San Francisco 49ers last Sunday in overtime, 26-23, while the Titans lost to Miami on the road, 16-10. The two teams have met 44 times — with the Colts dominating the series so far, including winning 31 total and all of the last 11, as the NFL odds have been able to predict It’s possible that both teams will feature a backup quarterback, as the Colts are still waiting for Andrew Luck’s shoulder to respond to treatment and will start Jacoby Brissett, and the Titans are waiting to see whether Marcus Mariota will be able to practice today. He has been limited all week thanks to the hamstring injury he suffered last week against the Dolphins. Check out our thoughts on this game before you lock in your NFL lines for the week.

Why should you bet on the Colts?

Jacoby Brissett has moved into leading the Colts’ offense fairly well. Indianapolis had a 23-9 lead with fewer than 10 minutes to go in the fourth period before the 49ers showed an uncharacteristic burst of offense and tied the game with 20 seconds left in regulation. The Colts gained 447 yards on the day and picked up 25 first downs, winning the time of possession battle by more than six minutes. Tailback Frank Gore is averaging just over three yards per carry on the season, which is putting more of a burden on the passing game, but Brissett has acquitted himself fairly well. The Colts’ defense has been the problem in their losses — as well as in the overtime win over San Francisco. The 49ers’ offense — led by journeyman Brian Hoyer, who is not one of the prime offensive quarterbacks in the game — gained 402 yards in the game last Sunday. The Colts need to find ways to get stops, particularly if Mariota is able to return from his hamstring injury and play for the Titans. The pass rush and pass coverage need to improve especially, as Mariota will torch the Colts if he gets plenty of time to sit in the pocket.

Why should you put your money on the Titans?

The Titans could desperately use a bye week to get healthy, but they still have several weeks’ worth of games before they get that break. We saw how they looked without Mariota, as Matt Cassel went 25 for 42 for 162 yards and a touchdown — but also a pair of interceptions. DeMarco Murray is having a decent season, averaging almost five yards per carry, but the fact that the Titans could only gain 188 yards of offense against the Miami Dolphins shows that they need Mariota back and at full health to get their offense going. They’ve slipped to #28 in the NFL in passing yardage per game (183.8), and they’re only scoring 22 points per game. Are the Titans a safe bet in Week 6? The story on defense is even worse, as they sit at #30 in the NFL, permitting 28.4 points per game. The fact that a Jay Cutler-led offense was able to outscore them and take the win tells you all you need to know about the state of the Titans’ defense. If you like the Titans here, then you think that Mariota will be able to return, and the Titans will be able to stop the Colts more effectively than they’ve been able to stop teams so far this season.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

If I’m going to bet on this game, I’m waiting until we see whether Mariota is going to start. As it stands, I like the Colts to win — if Cassel (or Brandon Weeden) will appear at quarterback for the Titans. With Mariota out, I predict a 16-9 win for the Colts.
