In the first week, we saw Minnesota hang 42 points in an unusually productive preseason opener. We saw C.J. Beathard complete some long passes down the field against a Dallas secondary that still has a lot of questions to answer. Most Interesting Matches

Bills at Browns

Did you know that Cleveland has won five preseason games in a row now? That’s right — they went 4-0 last year and won last week over the Giants, 20-10, thanks to three touchdown passes from Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield. The running game needs to get going — and there’s a wealth of talent back there, from Carlos Hyde to Duke Johnson to rookie Nick Chubb — and the defense is crazy fast. They have Buffalo coming into town for the 2018 NFL Preseason Week 2, and when your quarterbacks are AJ McCarron, Nathan Peterman, and Josh Allen, your offense is in, shall we say, transition. Allen should get the majority of the playing time for the Bills, as McCarron and Peterman both got hurt in practice on Sunday. Allen went 9 for 19 for 116 yards and a score in the preseason opener against Carolina. Even so, I like Cleveland to win and cover.

Jets at Redskins

The New York Jets put up a 17-0 shutout on Atlanta in their preseason opener. For Jets fans, the most exciting part of the win was seeing rookie quarterback Sam Darnold go 13 for 18 for 96 yards and lead a two-minute scoring drive in the waning minutes of the first half, in which he completed six passes in a row. The seventh was dropped; the eighth was caught but waved off because of offensive pass interference; the ninth was caught for a touchdown. Teddy Bridgewater also looked sharp for the Jets, and a team with that many offensive options has optimism. They roll into Washington, who gave up an early lead against New England last week. They went up 17-0, only to see the Pats put up 26 unanswered points against the reserves. Teddy Bridgewater will play for the Jets in the 2018 NFL Preseason Week 2. The Redskins did like what they got out of Colt McCoy, who went 13 for 18 for 189 yards and a pair of scores, with accurate passes. He got most of his action in the first half and solidified his spot as Alex Smith’s backup. However, the Jets’ defense looked better than Washington’s in Week One — holding Atlanta scoreless is no small feat. Give me the Jets to cover.

Bengals at Cowboys

Dallas went to San Francisco and took an early lead, only to see the 49ers come back and win by three, as the Cowboys’ reserves simply couldn’t stop the San Francisco passing game at the end. However, in Week 2, we should see more time from the starting units, and both the offense and defense were able to control the 49ers in the early going. Dallas faces a Cincinnati team that put up 30 on Chicago in their preseason opener and that played their starters for almost the entire first quarter. The Bengals are looking for a spark after a couple of down seasons, and Andy Dalton had a couple of touchdown passes in that opening quarter. The Cowboys’ starting defense is a lot better than the Bears’, though, and Dallas has more going with their starting O-line than Chicago does. Give me Dallas to win and cover in the 2018 NFL Preseason Week 2.
