Updated 2019 Stanley Cup Odds – March 14th Edition

Written by on March 14, 2019

We’re just a matter of weeks away from the 2019 Stanley Cup playoffs, in which 16 teams embark on a journey of as many as four best-of-seven series hoping to hoist one of the most storied trophies in all of sport at the end. The Tampa Bay Lightning are far and away the front-runner in this chase, one of just a handful of teams to reach the 110-point mark by the 70th game of the season. Remember that the Lightning were viewed as heavy favorites a year ago but could not make it past Washington into the Stanley Cup Finals, though, and once we get past Tampa Bay in the standings, there is a logjam of teams behind them vying for #2 in the league’s power rankings. So it is just a matter of momentum in a series, once again, that could knock the Lightning off course for a Stanley Cup. We have the latest 2019 Stanley Cup betting odds for each team to raise the Cup in June as well as our thoughts about some of the top contenders.

Calgary is getting an historic season out of Johnny Gaudreau, who will be a Hart Trophy finalist and will set career bests in goals as well as points. The league has moved toward a game that is friendly to free-wheeling offense, and players who are built like Gaudreau and who have his skill set will continue to blossom here. However, if Mike Smith and David Rittich can’t figure things out in net, the Flames will have yet anohter disappointment. Washington is a terrific value pick here. They are peaking at just the right point in the season, and they don’t have that giant monkey on their back this time. Instead, it’s just about time to put the hammer down in a title repeat. Without the pressure, can the Capitals roll to another title? They’re rolling over the opposition right now, winners of seven in a row until that loss in Pittsburgh on Monday night. The New York Islanders are better than people thought they would be at this point, and they have a window that should stay open for two or three more seasons. With that said, they have several free agents who are set to hit the market in the offseason. They’ve taken some ugly losses lately and saw Washington shoot past them to the top of the Metropolitan Division. The Isles need to put that lightning back in the bottle if they want to push through the conference and play in that Final. Dallas is finally playing defense more than once a week, and that’s why they are in the top wild card position in the West. However, they fell off the table last year and slid out of the playoffs in historic fashion. That’s why Ken Hitchcock only lasted one year in his second stint behind the Dallas bench. There is tons of talent on the front line, and there is an elite goalie in net. There are solid defensemen, including a special talent in John Klingberg. There’s no reason why the Stars shouldn’t be at the top of the Central…except for that refusal to commit to defensive hockey. Now that Ben Bishop has posted three straight shutouts, will the Stars finally play on both ends of the ice consistently? St. Louis is another Central Division team that can skate circles around you, score in bunches, and shut down your offense. They can also turn in stinkers of games, much like Dallas, which is why they’ve been up and down the standings. They’re on fire right now, though, coming back up the standings, and their top players are nearing the end of their windows for elite play. Can the Blues keep producing?
