Your Guide to Winning Soccer Bets: Copa America Quarterfinal Picks & Predictions

The Copa America quarterfinals got underway on Thursday night, and Ecuador blew a golden chance to eliminate Argentina. They had the early advantage in terms of pressure but could not find the back of the net.

Ecuador couldn’t capitalize on their chances in penalties, despite Messi’s panenka hitting the woodwork. After coming back from a 1-0 deficit, they lost the match, giving them much to ponder during their journey home.

Three quarterfinal matches remain, so let’s take a quick look at each of those as you plan your sports betting for the weekend.

Venezuela +180 vs Canada +180

When: Friday, July 5, 9:00 pm ET
Euro Cup Totals: Draw +190, O/U 2.5

Canada has a sterling goalie in Maxime Crepeau, who mans the pipes for MLS’ Portland Timbers and was in net for LAFC in 2022 when they won the MLS Cup.

He took the starting job for the Canadian national team away from Milan Borjan after the 2022 World Cup, as Borjan stepped aside after 80 caps, the most for any goalie in Canadian history.

At Copa America, Crepeau has posted a pair of clean sheets and leads all goalies with 16 saves.

Venezuela has one of the best scorers left in the tournament in Salomon Rondon.

Playing for Liga MX side Pachuca, he has 195 goals over 573 appearances in a senior career that has spanned 18 years (starting when he was just 16 years old).

For the national team, he has 43 goals in 107 appearances, and he has two goals so far in Copa America.

Canada comes with surprisingly little value to get the win here (both teams also have identically -114 odds to advance).

Even so, I’m taking Venezuela to win and advance.

Colombia -320 vs Panama +900

When: Saturday, July 6, 6:00 pm ET
Euro Cup Totals: Draw +400, O/U 2.5

Panama draws a lot of its offense from forward Jose Fajardo. Since joining the national team in 2017, he has notched 13 goals in 51 matches.

This year, in Group C play, he nailed the winning goal against the United States, securing a 2-1 result.

In the Group C finale, he opened the scoring against Bolivia, giving Panama a 1-0 lead that they would surrender before piling on more offense late in a 3-1 win.

Colombia’s captain, midfielder James Rodriguez, has been a mainstay for the national side since coming on in 2011.

In 103 appearances, he has scored 27 times. His professional club is São Paulo, in Brazil’s first division.

He also has played parts of four campaigns in the Spanish La Liga for Real Madrid, tallying 29 goals across 85 matches.

Panama put together a tremendous run to come out of their group, but they hit reality here.

Colombia to win and advance.

Uruguay +185 vs Brazil +170

When: Saturday, July 6, 9:00 pm ET
Euro Cup Totals: Draw +210, O/U 2.5

Brazil will look for their forward, Savio, to get back to making plays. He excels at moving without the ball, and his speed makes it hard for opponents to keep up on him.

Playing for Girona FC last season, he put up nine goals and 11 assists. He sent four shots toward the goal in the group stage, scoring one goal.

That was an apt microcosm for the difficulties that Brazil had with their offense in group play.

Uruguay has an offense that is firing on all cylinders so far. Forward Darwin Nunez has a huge leg and can send the ball toward the net with rapidity.

He has two goals on 13 shots, one of two Uruguay players who have found the back of the net twice.

Given Uruguay’s performance so far, it’s a little surprising that they have odds this long, so I’m taking advantage of that value.

Uruguay to win and advance.
