San Diego Padres vs. Milwaukee Brewers Thursday MLB Betting Preview

When a team is struggling through the season, there is a certain expectation that changes will be made at the trade deadline. Fans can generally get a good idea of the direction that their team is taking when these changes are made, and it’s not all of them who end up happy. The San Diego Padres and Milwaukee Brewers took very different approaches at the deadline, and some MLB betting fans may be happier than others. These two will hook up for a Thursday matinee in Milwaukee.

It was expected that the Padres (52-55) would send Justin Upton and Craig Kimbrel packing at the trade deadline, but the lack of moves made has some Padres fans a little baffled. Yes, this team has played well to start the second half, but they are still out of playoff contention, and are quickly running out of time. There appears to be no way back into the division race, and at 7 games back in the Wild Card, it would appear that their chances are pretty slim there, too. Detroit got this series off to a winning start with a 13-5 rout, but dropped the second game 4-1. If they are to get back into the swing of things, these are the types of series that they need to win. After this one, they have 4 straight series against teams with sub .500 records, which represents a real shot at making up some ground. Odrisamer Despaigne (5-7, 4.75 ERA) will be on the mound in search of his third straight win. There has not been a lot to cheer about for fans of the Milwaukee Brewers (45-63) this season, yet they are a pretty happy bunch after the events of the trade deadline. The Brewers swung a number of moves that saw them land no less than 7 very hot prospects. This was a franchise that was pretty slim in the prospects category, so these moves are a definite sign that they are headed in the right direction. The Brewers showed some promise at the start of the second half by going on a bit of a hot streak, but they have cooled off considerably since then, and are now just 2-8 in their last 10 games. Matt Garza (5-12, 5.17 ERA) has struggled all year, and will need to improve on Thursday if he doesn’t want to take a third straight loss.

Key Betting Trends

On paper, not a particularly great pitching match-up, but one that definitely gives the edge to the Padres. I think they will win this one in a bit of a slugfest.
