There’s no surprise atop the odds list for Most Valuable Player in Super Bowl LIII, as Tom Brady and Jared Goff are the top two. As the quarterbacks, they have a much greater probability than players of other positions to win. In the last nine Super Bowls, seven of the Most Valuable Players have been the winning quarterback, including Nick Foles, who took home the trophy last year with Philadelphia — and then returned to the bench behind Carson Wentz. Let’s take a look at the top contender Super Bowl 53 MVP odds and discuss which ones make the most betting sense for you going into the NFL’s biggest game.

Tom Brady

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +110

Brady has thrown for more than 340 yards in each of the Patriots’ two postseason games, and the team has scored 78 combined points. New England has won five Super Bowls with Brady at quarterback, leading to four MVP trophies in Brady’s cabinet at home. The only exception came in 2005, when wideout Deion Branch went home as the MVP. If you think the Patriots will win, then picking Brady as your MVP is a no-brainer.

Jared Goff

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +225

Goff has not passed for more than one touchdown in six of the Rams’ last seven games. This means that even if the Rams win, it might be someone else on the Los Angeles roster who earns the top slot.

Todd Gurley II

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +1100

This is an interesting slot to see Gurley in given the scant action he got in the NFC Championship. The Saints’ staff insisted that there was not a recurrence of Gurley’s knee problems; instead, Gurley was on the sideline because, according to Rams coach Sean McVay, the game had more of a grinding style, and the team thought C.J. Anderson was the better option. It will be interesting to see if Gurley gets more action — and since he’s the highest-paid running back in the NFL, he certainly should expect more action. If Gurley did win, he would be the first tailback since 1998, when Terrell Davis took home the trophy, to win the MVP.

Sony Michel

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +1500

Michel broke the 100-yard mark in the AFC Championship despite not touching the ball in the fourth quarter or overtime. His bruising style has made a huge difference for the Patriots in the postseason, and another big game could yield him the big trophy.

Aaron Donald

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +1800

Two of the last five Super Bowl MVPs have been defensive players. Donald had 20 ½ sacks on the regular season and is the Rams’ signature defensive player. If Donald disrupts Brady enough, and if he can get a strip-sack, he might be the MVP.

James White

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +2000

White scores touchdowns, and touchdowns get you MVP trophies. Whether it’s out of the backfield or catching passes down the field, White is a player whose name we should hear a lot next Sunday.

C.J. Anderson

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +2500

Anderson has been the subject of many memes because of his “bowling ball” physique, but he has left bruises on defender after defender since the Rams signed him. If he has another performance like the one he had against Dallas in the divisional round, he could win the trophy.

Julian Edelman

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +2500

He ALMOST muffed a punt in the AFC Championship, but he didn’t. He went on to make crucial catches on third downs in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Rob Gronkowski

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +3300

Same reasoning as Edelman, but Gronkowski doesn’t look quite his usual self these days. I’m not sure if the moneyline value is worth this wager.

Brandin Cooks / Robert Woods

• Super Bowl 53 MVP Odds: +4000 / +5000

Two Rams wideouts could make a difference and get the trophy if they catch multiple touchdown passes. However, big receiving days usually end up sending the MVP trophy to the quarterback who threw the ball in the first place.
