TCU vs. Minnesota

Game Analysis

The TCU Horned Frogs (12-1 SU, 11-2 ATS) may have fallen just short in their quest to reach the first-ever NCAA four-team playoff a year ago, but they’re back with a vengeance and have legitimate hopes of reaching the national championship game. TCU will visit a Minnesota Gophers (8-5 SU, 8-5 ATS, 6-7 O/U) program that enters the 2015 campaign looking to build on their impressive eight-win season and second place finish in the Big Ten West division a year ago. TCU is a two-touchdown favorite to win this regular season opener, mostly because they are absolutely loaded with talent, starting with gifted dual-threat quarterback, Trevone Boykin. trevone-boykin The Heisman Trophy candidate had a stupendous 2014 campaign by throwing for 3,901 yards with 33 touchdowns and just 10 interceptions while also rushing for 707yards and eight additional touchdowns to account for a jaw-dropping 41 touchdowns and over 4,600 yards of total offense. Boykin is a star of the highest order, but that’s not why TCU is one of the top national championship favorites. No, the Horned Frogs have one of the best trios in all of college football with minnesota-football Gary Patterson’s squad ranked second in the nation in scoring last season (46.5 ppg) and could be even better in 2015 thanks to the contributions of running back Aaron Green (922 rushing yards) and wide receiver Josh Doctson (1,018 receiving yard, 11touchdowns). The Horned Frogs have 10 returning starters on offense and six on defense and beat Minnesota 30-7 in September of 2014 to easily cash in as a huge, 17-point home favorite. The Gophers averaged a solid 28.3 ppg last season while allowing 24.1 per contest defensively for head coach Jerry Kill. Junior quarterback Mitch Leidner returns to lead a passing attack that ranked a discouraging 119th in the nation last year. Not only that, but Minnesota will go into battle this season without its two best playmakers from last season’s team with running back David Cobb and tight end Maxx Williams both playing at the next level now. One of the best rushing teams in the nation last season, Minnesota installed a new, no-huddle offense this spring. minnesota-football “We can’t lose our identity of who we are,” Kill says. “We’re going to run the football. But I think we win two or three more games last year if we throw it a little bit better. That’s our fault (as coaches), not the kids’ fault.”

The Pick

I’m going on record right now to say that Trevone Boykin may not only be the best quarterback in the country, but the best player in all of college football in 2015. While Minnesota compiled an impressive 4-1 ATS mark in their last five games of the 2014 season, I’m urging you to back Trevone Boykin and the TCU Horned Frogs to record a win over the Gophers that is akin to the beating they put on Minnesota last season. TCU has gone 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games and a bankroll-boosting 13-3 ATS in their last 16 games overall. The 14-point spread may look a bit big seeing as how Minnesota is a quality opponent, but I say, don’t worry, TCU’s high-powered offense will cover it with a bit of room to spare.

The Pick: TCU -14 Points
