The Dodgers (75-58) took a massive step towards a division title by going 5-1 in their last home stand, whilst also sweeping the San Francisco Giants, the team that is chasing them in the division. There was no celebrations or popping of champagne corks, though, as the Dodgers knew that the next couple of weeks would see them go on a 10-game road trip. LA has been inexplicably ordinary on the road this season, and currently sit 9 games under .500 after losing the first game in this series versus the Padres.
Even if they could have maintained a .500 record away from Dodger Stadium, this division would be done and dusted. The only thing going in their favor right now is that the Giants look to be sinking like a stone, and don’t seem able to make any sort of serious challenge. Mike Bolsinger (5-3, 2.83 ERA) will get the start for the Dodgers.
The goal of the San Diego Padres (65-69) right now is probably just to get back over .500 before the season comes to a close. They have a solid opportunity to get close in this series, as they do not have to face the red hot Clayton Kershaw over the 4 games. They do have Zack Greinke to look forward to on Sunday, but they could have this series won by the time that game rolls around. Other than the two pitchers mentioned, the Dodgers really don’t have much else in the way of a real threat in their starting rotation. That was made very clear in the first game of this series, with the Padres managing to get 10 runs home in a 10-7 win. There really is very little for San Diego to play for at the moment, but playing some sort of role is the playoff race may be something that serves as inspiration. James Shields (10-6, 3.78 ERA) will get the start for San Diego.
