However, there are some other teams that have a shot, such as Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Texas. There is often a gap between the buzz around different teams and the reality that they face going into the season. Ohio State Buckeyes

It is true that Ohio State has dominated the Big Ten since Urban Meyer became the head coach in 2012. However, 2019 will be the first season for new head coach Ryan Day. The Buckeyes’ offense lost Dwayne Haskins, who is now on the Washington Redskins’ roster. Haskins threw for over 4,850 yards, ran for over 1,000 yards, caught passes for 1,750 yards and scored 59 combined touchdowns during his time in the Horseshoe. Nick Bosa and Dre’Mont Jones have left the defensive line for the professional ranks as well, which means that Ohio State will be young on both sides of the ball — while Michigan has a new offensive coordinator who came from Alabama to guide quarterback Shea Patterson. So the Buckeyes are not going to roll through the Big Ten East this time.

Oregon Ducks

The Ducks’ quarterback is not overrated — Justin Herbert is one of the top rated signal-callers in all of college football and, unless his season falls off the table, he will be one of the first picks in next year’s NFL draft. The Ducks have recruited well the past two seasons, but they have not been viewed as a contender since Marcus Mariota, now a Tennessee Titan, was leading the offense. Herbert led the Ducks to just a 9-4 season in 2018, and with some departures taking place around him, it is hard to see the Ducks pushing to a Pac-12 title. However, in a conference with no sure things, not even Washington, anything can happen.

Texas A&M Aggies

Jimbo Fisher enters his second season in College Station, and as he showed at Florida State, he can build a winner. However, the Aggies face four of the top seven teams in the last AP Top 25 poll from the 2018-19 campaign, including the top two — Clemson and Alabama, with Clemson coming on the road. The Aggies have a considerable amount of talent, but for the Aggies really to be a contender, they would have to win at least one of these two games and then still make it through the gauntlet known as the SEC West.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Yes, the Irish went 12-0 in the regular season against a difficult schedule last season — but then they went down in flames in a 30-3 whipping against Clemson in the national semifinal. As an independent, they really do not have that many soft opponents, and despite Ian Book returning at quarterback, Notre Dame has a tough march to another undefeated finish. They play at Georgia, host a surging Virginia team, play at Michigan, and host USC while finishing at Stanford. Can they win all five of those? They can — but it is a tough tightrope to walk.

Michigan Wolverines

Do the Wolverines have an opportunity as Ohio State changes head coaches? Yes, but remember that the Wolverines have gone 0-3 against teams that went to the College Football Playoff that year, other than Ohio State, and 0-4 against Ohio State. The Wolverines have tough dates at Wisconsin, at home against Notre Dame, and at Penn State this year — before hosting Ohio State in the finale. It is hard to see the Wolverines negotiating their schedule without a loss or two, which can be the kiss of death with the CFP committee.
