UFC 240 Odds, Preview & Picks

Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, will be the site of UFC 240 on Saturday night. The headliner will be a fight for the UFC Featherweight Championship, between the defending champion, Max Holloway, and former UFC Lightweight Champion Frankie Edgar. This fight was first on the slate for UFC 218 and then at UFC 222, but injuries to the fighters forced the postponement to this weekend. features a champion who has truly dominated his weight class in UFC. He put together a 10-fight winning streak to get his title shot against Jose Aldo, whom he then beat to take the title and then again to defend it. He defended it against Brian Ortega, which left no one else of note in the division for him to fight. He went up to take on Dustin Poirier for the interim lightweight title and took a beating from the harder-hitting Poirier. That was his first setback in 14 fights, but he still has not lost a featherweight bout in six years. Edgar comes in with an intriguing resume of his own, having taken the lightweight title from B.J. Penn and then defended it. He would then beat Gray Maynard before losing twice to Benson Henderson and deciding to cut down to the featherweight division. His level of power is more suited to this division, as he showed when he demolished Cub Swanson. His inability to stop Aldo is what separates Holloway from him at this point. Given Holloway’s exceptional takedown defense — and Edgar’s reliance on his wrestling to deliver wins — the moneylines seem right here. Holloway is longer and has shown a deeper well of cardio endurance — plus he has the wins over Aldo that Edgar does not. Holloway will pile up the points and wear Edgar down. Final Prediction: Holloway wins via decision

Cris “Cyborg” Justino (20-2) vs Felicia Spencer (7-0)

gives us an interesting question to answer: now that Cyborg lost to Amanda Nunes and is about to see her UFC contract come to an end, what will happen to the UFC women’s featherweight class? Much of the drama here came, for years, from the possible matchup between Cyborg and Ronda Rousey, but Rousey would never add the weight, and Cyborg got hurt while trying to cut down and came back bigger. Cyborg won the featherweight crown from Tonya Evinger, and in Felicia Spencer she is actually fighting a natural featherweight instead of the inflated bantamweights that have faced her. Spencer comes in as the heavy underdog despite an undefeated record and a recent win over Megan Anderson, the third UFC women’s featherweight fighter. She started out in MMA as a grappler, but she developed some striking power while fighting with Invicta. However, she usually tries to take down her opponents and get to their backs. This will not work against Cyborg, who will deliver punishment when Spencer gets in range. Final Prediction: Justino wins via submission
