Clemson heads to Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech in ACC action on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers come in with a perfect 4-0 record, thanks to wins over Wake Forest, The Citadel, Virginia and Miami (FL). Georgia Tech has posted a 2-2 slate thus far, with wins over Florida State and Louisville and losses to UCF and Syracuse. Clemson’s offense has been producing in bunches, scoring at least 37 points in each of their first four games. Obviously, rolling against Wake Forest and The Citadel isn’t all that impressive, but Virginia is improved this year, and Miami was the #7 team in the nation — and could only muster ten offensive points, with the other touchdown coming on special teams. Can Georgia Tech hang with Clemson, or will the Tigers roll to another rout?

NCAAF Preview: Clemson at Georgia Tech
Why Clemson Will Win
In their takedown of the Hurricanes, Clemson got 292 yards and three touchdowns out of quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Braden Galloweay caught four of those passes for 74 yards and a pair of scores. Tailback Travis Etienne only needed 17 carries to run for 149 yards and post two touchdowns.
Clemson has covered in ten of their last 12 games as a road favorite, and in 18 of their last 26 conference games. One interesting note, here, is that in October games, Clemson has covered seven of their last nine. That’s a little misleading, given the fact that Clemson plays in a conference with so many teams that do not deliver a major challenge, and October is often stocked with conference matchups. The fact that Clemson could roll over Miami by 25 points should be concerning for those who wonder if Clemson’s defense is up to the task of covering such a large line this week.
Why Georgia Tech Will Win
Georgia Tech beat Louisville, 46-27, in what had to be a huge confidence builder. Quarterback Jeff Sims went 11 of 21 for 249 yards and two scores through the air. He also led the team in rushing with 64 yards on seven carries, scoring again with his feet. His top target was Malachi Carter, who caught three passes for 89 yards and a score.
Georgia Tech has only covered three times in their last 11 games as an underdog — although one of those three times happened last week. They have only covered twice in their last 11 games at Bobby Dodd Stadium and five times in their last 19 contests overall. If you like the Yellow Jackets to cover here, then you remember that Virginia also has a running quarterback and put up 23 points on Clemson, losing by 18 points. Also, Georgia Tech’s win over Louisville puts them ahead of where Virginia is, at least offensively.
The Final Word
Looking at these huge point spreads can make betting on college football stressful. After all, it only takes a couple of lapses on defense to give up a few scores and then put the burden back on the offense. I think Clemson goes down to Georgia Tech and wins, but I’m going to take the points. I predict a final score of Clemson 44, Georgia Tech 23.
