Updated Odds to Win the 2020 Masters

Written by on October 19, 2020

Why is Bryson DeChambeau the favorite to win the 2020 Masters? He’s shown that he can drive the ball well over 300 yards…with accuracy. That helped him win the 2020 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, and Augusta National is a course that big hitters can conquer…so long as they can find the fairways. The Masters this year is set for November 12-15, so we’re still a few weeks away, but it’s time to take another look at the Golf betting odds for the tournament winner.

Dustin Johnson was the runner-up at the 2019 Masters and won the Tour Championship / FedExCup title at East Lake. He also has top-ten finishes at each of his last four starts at the Masters. One potential problem was a withdrawal from the CJ Cup this past weekend because of a positive COVID-19 test. He has four weeks to get better, which seems to have been enough for athletes in multiple sports.

Jon Rahm is another big bomber who has shown the potential for accuracy to dominate Augusta National. He’s also a putter with ice in his veins, and that combination should help him out, given the extended weather forecast of drier and cooler conditions for the Masters than usual (the Masters is a spring tournament but faced delays due to COVID-19).

Bryson DeChambeau won the U.S. Open by six shots despite the fact that Winged Foot has a bit of a reputation for challenging rough. Augusta National does not penalize slight inaccuracies to the same degree of some other courses. Given his hitting distance, it will be interesting to see the angles he tries to take over trees that have his peers working to lay up. There is the risk that he won’t be able to access green-reading books for Augusta.

Patrick Reed is giving very high value given the fact that he is a former Masters champions. In 2020, he has tied for 13th in the other two majors and has won a WGC tournament. At the BMW PGA Championship on the European Tour two weeks ago, we saw him excel in cold weather conditions, so a brisk weekend at Augusta National shouldn’t shake him too much. On the other hand, August National has been feast or famine for Reed; he won here in 2018, but in his other five starts, he has two missed cuts, and his other finishes have not been higher than T22.

Tiger Woods, of course, is the defending champion, winner of his fifth green jacket a year ago, paying on +2500 odds. In 2020, though, Woods has not maintained the same form that he showed in 2019. In his last six starts, his finishes have been 68th, T40th, T37th, T58th, T51st and a missed cut. His putter has absolutely abandoned him in 2020. Those numbers and trends don’t bode well for him this year.
