Weekly Rundown after NFL Week 10

Weekly Rundown after NFL Week 10

Written by on November 18, 2020

Things are about to start heating up as we move into the second half of the NFL’s 2020 campaign. In the AFC, there are nine teams with records of 6-3 or better; in the NFC, no team has fewer than two losses, which means that there is plenty of shuffling in both conferences to come as the teams compete for 14 playoff spots.

As you plan your NFL betting for the coming weekend, let’s take a look at some of the latest NFL news you can use.

NFL News:  Weekly Rundown after Week 10

N.Y. Giants fire offensive line coach Marc Colombo

The Giants’ O-line has improved significantly, with the team rushing for more than 150 yards in each of the last three weeks — and that’s without Saquon Barkley in the lineup. Even so, first-year head coach Joe Judge has replaced Colombo with Dave DeGuglielmo. On Tuesday, Judge told Colombo that he was bringing in DeGuglielmo as an offensive line consultant, and Colombo felt that Judge was undermining him. Another team source indicated that Judge, a hands-on coach, wanted a guy he knew to give him more control of a position that is outside Judge’s expertise. Colombo had closer ties to new offensive coordinator Jason Garrett from their time with the Dallas Cowboys. It remains to be seen whether this change will alter the Giants’ momentum, which took a big step forward when the Giants got their third win of the season, knocking off NFC East-leading Philadelphia on Sunday.

Drew Brees has a collapsed lung, fractured ribs, no set timeline to return

New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees got a second opinion on his injuries and had the first opinion confirmed: five fractured ribs (involving both sides of his body) and a collapsed lung. Doctors have not provided a timetable for Brees to return. Saints coach Sean Payton has not yet named a starter; on his WWL radio show on Monday, he indicated that he would use both Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill. Winston came on in relief of Brees in the Saints’ win over San Francisco, but Hill came on for seven snaps during the second half. Hill is a run-heavy quarterback, while Winston is more of a  dropback passer, and having different gifts will benefit the Saints, just as it does when Hill comes on for Brees — and when he appears as the punter.

Joe Burrow and Tee Higgins have made a rookie connection

The LSU and Clemson products are making hay in Cincinnati, even while the team is struggling on defense. Burrow has a 12:5 TD:INT ratio, which is especially impressive given the amount of time he spends running from opposing pass rushers. Many rookie passers are hurried into interceptions due to the greater speed of the pro game, but Burrow has shown terrific judgment. Burrow is the first rookie ever to post three straight 300-yard passing games, and he went for 406 yards and three scores in Week 7. The only quarterback with more pass attempts in 2020 than Burrow is Tom Brady. Higgins did not catch a pass in 15 snaps on the field in the Bengals’ opener, but since then he has caught 40 balls in eight games, and he has two 100-yard receiving games in his last four games. He ranks #2 among rookies for receiving yards in 2020. Expect this combo to keep putting up big numbers.

Speaking of rookies…how about Chase Young?

On Sunday, Young was called for roughing the passer with 12 seconds on the clock in Sunday’s game in Detroit. The 15 yards put the Lions in position for a game-winning, 59-yard field goal. After the game, Young called that penalty a “rookie mistake,” but this has by and large been a breakout season for him. He has an 18.4% pass rush win rate, good for 16th in the league, so while he only has 3 ½ sacks so far, he is influencing opposing passers, and the sacks will come.
