The first official day of summer has come and gone, which means that the pennant races in Major League Baseball will start to heat up soon. As you figure out what MLB odds and betting choices you want to make this week, take a look at three matchups we’ve picked for Tuesday. The Chicago Cubs visit the Washington Nationals, the Texas Rangers are in Cleveland to face the Indians, and the Baltimore Orioles are north of the border to face the Toronto Blue Jays. Chicago Cubs at Washington Nationals

When: Tuesday June 17, 2017; 6:05pm CT Where: Nationals Park; Washington D.C. TV: MLBN (out-of-market only) / ABC 7 (Chicago) / MASN (Washington) Radio: 670 The Score (Chicago) / 106.7 The Fan (Washington) Stream Option: MLB.tv MLB Odds: Washington Nationals -152 Pitching Matchup: Jake Arrieta (7-5, 4.36) (CHI) vs Max Scherzer (8-5, 2.09 ERA) (WAS) One the one side, we have a Cubs team that enters this series against the Nationals having won six of their last ten, but also sitting just a single game over the .500 mark. Arrieta has had some real struggles this season, but he may have turned a corner his last time out. Against the Miami Marlins, he needed just 82 pitches to go seven strong innings, limiting the Miami offense to a single run. Max Scherzer takes the hill for the Nationals. He recorded a hard loss last time out, going eight innings and striking out 11 batters, but also permitting a pair of unearned runs. He has now struck out at least 10 batters in each of his last six starts. Given that both of these pitchers have had real ace stuff the last couple of seasons, it’s not surprising that neither side has done much damage at the plate against the other pitcher. However, given the fact that Scherzer has had the much sharper season this year, I’m picking the Nationals to win this one at home.

Baltimore Orioles at Toronto Blue Jays

When: Tuesday June 27, 2017; 6:07pm CT Where: Rogers Centre; Toronto, ON TV: MASN 2 (Baltimore) / SNET (Toronto) Radio: 105.7 The Fan (Baltimore) / SN590 (Toronto) Stream Option: MLB.tv MLB Odds: Toronto Blue Jays -110 Pitching Matchup: Kevin Gausman (3-7, 6.47 ERA) (BAL) vs Joe Biagini (2-6, 4.45 ERA) (TOR) This game could definitely turn into a barnburner, as we have a pair of starting pitchers who have given up some big totals so far this season. For example, Joe Biagini has gone 2-5 with a 4.91 ERA in his last nine starts, regressing somewhat from his April form. In his last start, he permitted four runs in 5 ⅔ innings. The Orioles don’t exactly have their ace going either, as Kevin Gausman has failed to make it far enough to record an out in the sixth inning in four of his last five starts. He did get within one out of a quality start his last time out. Toronto is on a better trajectory right now than the Orioles are, as the Blue Jays are overcoming an awful April. The Orioles started out red-hot but have fallen way down the rungs in the American League East. Justin Smoak, Troy Tulowitzki, Darwin Barney, Jose Bautista and Josh Donaldson have all taken Gausman deep in the past, and I see the Blue Jays taking this win at home.

Texas Rangers at Cleveland Indians

When: Tuesday June 27, 7:10 PM ET Where: Progressive Field TV: MLBN (out-of-market only) / FSSW (Texas) / SportsTime Ohio (Cleveland) Radio: KFLC 1270 (Texas) / WTAM 1100 (Cleveland) Live Stream: MLB.tv MLB Odds: Indians -185 Pitching Matchup: Tyson Ross (1-1, 9.35 ERA) (TEX) vs Mike Clevinger (3-3, 3.86 ERA)(CLE) Mike Clevinger picked up a win for the Tribe his last time out, going five innings and permitting just a pair of runs against Baltimore on Thursday. He has never started a game against the Rangers, and those Texas batters who have faced him in relief have never gotten a hit off him. The Indians are coming off a tough sweep at the hands of the Minnesota Twins over the weekend — the first time Minnesota had pulled off a sweep in Cleveland since 1991. That is a mammoth ERA that Tyson Ross is sporting, thanks to those seven runs that he gave up last week in a loss to Toronto last week, going just three innings in his second start since returning from the disabled list. In his career, he has a 1-1 record and a 1.77 ERA in four appearances against Cleveland, but it’s been three years since he faced them. I’m a little nervous about Ross given his performance against Toronto in his last start — it’s not like the Blue Jays are one of the top offenses in MLB. I see the Indians pulling off this win on Tuesday night.
