The Washington Nationals and the Chicago Cubs bring the National League Division Series to the Windy City on Monday afternoon. Defending NL Cy Young winner Max Scherzer is set to start Game Three for the Nationals, opposite the Cubs’ Jose Quintana, who came over from the White Sox in a trade near the deadline this season. The Nationals rebounded from a tough Game One loss in this series to win Game Two, with their bats finally overcoming those postseason jitters. Why should you bet on the Nationals?

Max Scherzer makes his third NLDS start in the last two seasons this afternoon. However, he lost both of those despite permitting a single earned run in his second start last year. Against the Cubs, he has six career starts, posting a combined 2.92 ERA in those outings. While four of the Cubs’ regulars have never hit safely against Scherzer, Addison Russell (.400, 1 HR, 1 RBI), Jason Heyward (.364), Tommy La Stella (.500, 1 HR, 2 RBI) and Ben Zobrist (.278, 3 HR, 6 RBI) have all found pitches to hit against him. If you like the Nationals in this game, then you think that their offense, which Bryce Harper jump-started in Game Two, can get going against Quintana — a pitcher whom only three of them have ever faced. You also see them taking their winning ways on the road, an area in which they have struggled throughout their franchise history. This is a team that has dominated the National League East in recent years but is still looking for their first postseason series win.

Why should you put your money on the Cubs?

Jose Quintana has posted a 7-3 record and a 3.74 ERA since coming across town from the White Sox in the middle of July. Only three of the Nationals’ regulars have faced him, but Howie Kendrick (10 AB, .500 career average, 2 RBI) and Matt Wieters (2-3 lifetime) have had good luck against him up to this point. This will be Quintana’s postseason debut, and one issue that some pitchers face when they take the mound the first time in the postseason is elevated nerves and anxiety, which can lead to overthrowing and a lack of control. This is definitely something to watch as the first few innings unfold. He has shown a great deal of control lately, though, especially against lefthanders, as he has not issued a walk to a lefty since July 23, a streak that has reached 58 plate appearances. Are the Cubs a safe bet in Game 3 of the NLDS? The Cubs also have to overcome the emotional letdown of seeing a lead evaporate late in Game Two. They were five outs away from coming back to Chicago with a 2-0 series lead, but it was a pair of home runs from harper and Ryan Zimmermann that put the Nationals into the lead and delivered a comeback win.

Expert Pick and Final Score Prediction

With this NLDS basically down to a best-of-three — and with home field advantage at least temporarily in the hands of the Cubs — the momentum remains with Chicago despite that late loss on Saturday. I see the Cubs showing that same mental discipline that took them to a World Series crown a year ago and helped them lock away the National League Central title this season. In this game, though, I see Scherzer outpitching Quintana and leading the Nationals to a 5-2 win to put the Cubs on the brink of elimination from this NLDS.
