Vikings at Packers NFL Odds & Week 16 Pick

Written by on December 22, 2017

The Minnesota Vikings and the Green Bay Packers will meet for the 115th time on Saturday evening, as the Vikings head to Green Bay looking to complete the season sweep. The Vikings won the first meeting, 23-10, in Minneapolis earlier in the season, and they clinched the NFC North by routing Cincinnati last week, 34-7. Green Bay saw their playoff hopes come to an end when they lost, 31-24, at Carolina. Aaron Rodgers has been put on the injured reserve list for the rest of the season, so the Packers will have Brett Hundley back at quarterback. Check out our NFL odds preview for the latest edition of this classic rivalry.

Why should you bet on the Vikings?

Minnesota enters this game with an 11-2 record and the division in hand, but they need to keep winning to ensure that they get one of the NFC’s playoff byes. If they can win their last two games while Philadelphia drops their last two (which is possible given the fact that the Eagles are using backup quarterback Nick Foles), then the Vikings would have home field advantage all the way to the Super Bowl — since the Super Bowl is in Minneapolis this year. Quarterback Case Keenum continues to amaze; against Cincinnati he went 20 for 23 for 236 yards and two scores, giving him 20 touchdowns and just seven picks on the season. His quarterback rating of 98.9 ranks seventh in the NFL. As solid as the Vikings’ offense has been, though, the defense has been even better. When these two teams first met, the Vikings permitted just 155 yards through the air (this was, of course, the game where Rodgers broke his collarbone in the first place). Against Cincinnati, the Vikings permitted just 161 yards of total offense. On the season, they rank #2 in yards permitted per game (283.9) and points permitted per game (17.2). Those numbers indicate that we should expect a suffocating effort out of the Purple People Eaters once again.

Why should you put your money on the Packers?

This is a rivalry game, and the game will take place at Lambeau, in conditions that are likely to be wintry. The Packer faithful will be loud, and backup quarterback Brett Hundley has been serviceable during his time replacing Rodgers. It’s true that the Packers’ offense ranks just 23rd in the NFL in yards per game (314.0) and only score 22.1 points per game. However, if the Vikings decide to relax because they have clinched the division, Hundley has the arm to get the Packers on the board in a hurry. The defensive side of the ball is where the Packers will have real problems. They permit 23.8 points per game, ranked #21 in the NFL. Teams have had a fairly easy time against them both running and passing the ball; the catalyst for Green Bay has been the ability of Rodgers to lead drives when needed to keep up the offense or mount a comeback. With Rodgers on the bench, this will be a tall order for Hundley to fill.

Expert Pick and Final Prediction

Brett Hundley had a tough job to do when he slid into the shoes of Aaron Rodgers. He has played hard and delivered a number of wins, enough to where the Packers had a playoff chance when Rodgers returned last week. A combination of rust on Rodgers’ part, shoddy defense against Carolina and some bad luck led to the loss, and so Rodgers is on the shelf until next year. I see the Vikings taking this game and sending a message to the rest of the NFC contenders that they have higher ambitions than a division title. I predict a final score of Minnesota 34, Green Bay 16.
