Seattle at Dallas Week 16 NFL Lines & Expert Pick

Written by on December 22, 2017

Week 16 of the NFL regular season includes a visit by the Seattle Seahawks to Dallas to take on the Cowboys. Seattle took an absolute thrashing last week, losing at home to the Los Angeles Rams, 42-7. Dallas escaped Oakland with a 20-17 win last Sunday night to keep their faint postseason hopes alive. The Cowboys have to win both of their remaining games and hope that Detroit loses once and that Atlanta and New Orleans each lose both of their last two in order to qualify. Check out this NFL lines preview of this matchup of NFC contenders.

Why should you bet on the Seahawks?

Despite the fact that three of their top stars in the cornerback are out, this Legion of Boom is a proud unit, and the reserves have delivered in recent weeks, including their defeat of the Philadelphia Eagles. While there didn’t seem to be a lot of intensity on the defensive end for Seattle last week, the fact that this team may want to send a big message on the road this week could spell trouble for Dallas. Of course, playing away from home usually means a drop in intensity for the Seahawks, so this could also be a long week for their defense. What about that Seattle offense, though? They only gained 149 yards last week against the Rams. Los Angeles has the great Wade Phillips as their defensive coordinator, but the fact that Russell Wilson had to lead the team in running (with just 39 yards on the day) shows you how poorly the team’s search for a tailback has gone. Wilson went just 14 for 30 for 142 yards in the loss, including a long drive in garbage time that led to his lone passing touchdown. The Seahawks need better work out of their offensive line to open up holes for the running game and give Wilson time to throw the ball down the field.

Why should you put your money on the Cowboys?

After taking three ugly losses in the first half of the Ezekiel Elliott suspension, Dallas has won three straight — although the latest win took all sorts of luck. It took a gutsy fake punt call, a fourth-down conversion that only was called a first down after referee Gene Steratore used a folded index card to find the position of the football in relation to the chain marker, and a fumble by Derek Carr in the waning minutes. Carr was scrambling for the end zone and dove with the ball extended in one hand. Dallas safety Jeff Heath lowered the boom on Carr, dislodging the ball, which rolled into the end zone and then out of bounds, giving the Cowboys a touchback. So the intangibles of hustle and luck seem to be on Dallas’ side right now. As far as the offense goes, the unit was good enough. However, Dak Prescott threw two interceptions in an 18-for-27 night in which he threw for 212 yards. He didn’t have a touchdown pass, but he did run for one to help contribute to the win. If you like Dallas, then you see the return of Ezekiel Elliott giving the offense a needed jolt — and you also see the offensive line doing a better job of opening holes without getting called for holding.

Expert NFL Lines Pick and Final Prediction

Seattle has covered the spread in nine of their last 13 games coming after a straight up loss and in three of their last five games away from CenturyLink Field. Dallas, on the other hand, has covered the spread just once in their last six games against a team with a record above .500. I think Dallas comes out of this with a win, but it will be of the tight variety that we saw last week. I predict a final score of Dallas 27, Seattle 24 — with the Seahawks covering.
