    We’re less than two months away from the beginning of March Madness, which means that the men’s college basketball season is moving to the second half of conference play. We’ve seen some amazing upsets (such as Villanova losing at Butler, Duke losing at North Carolina State, Kansas losing at home to Texas Tech and Wichita State losing at home to SMU), but we also have some teams putting together solid resumes for inclusion in that bracket of 68 teams and to increase their College Basketball championship odds. Let’s take a look at the top contenders to win the whole thing — along with some of our observations about some of the front-runners.

    Top Contenders

    Duke

    • College Basketball Championship Odds: +450
    The Duke Blue Devils have beaten five teams in the top 40 of the KenPom (Ken Pomeroy) basketball rankings. Their 16-2 record features a pair of setbacks that were true road games (instead of neutral-site clashes). Yes, they did fall at North Carolina State, but on the whole, they’ve been mowing down their ACC competition.

    Michigan State

    • College Basketball Championship Odds: +450
    Michigan State may start sliding down this table pretty soon. Why? They’ve dropped two of their last three in Big Ten play, and they have only put up a .500 record (3-3) against teams that appear in the KenPom Top 50. Tom Izzo historically gets the most out of his teams, but the inconsistency here makes them a tough pick at this point.

    Villanova

    • College Basketball Championship Odds: +650
    Villanova did fall to Butler at the start of conference play, but they won four straight since to earn a 17-1 record. They have beaten Xavier, Tennessee, and Gonzaga. Their combination of inside play with speed on the perimeter makes them a favorite to go on a deep run. It may just be the lack of name recognition that has them below Duke and Michigan State on this odds list.

    Arizona

    • College Basketball Championship Odds: +1400
    Arizona has put up a 12-1 record since they dropped all three of their games at the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament. However, their competition has not been particularly strong, as just three of those wins have come against teams in the KenPom Top 50. So a team that was ranked #2 in the nation going into that early tournament and took a huge fall has worked their way back up.

    Wichita State

    • College Basketball Championship Odds: +1400
    Wichita State lost at home to SMU by five, suffering their first league loss as a member of the American Athletic Conference. However, the Shockers have beaten three teams in the KenPom top 50. But did the Mustangs expose some holes in the Shockers’ perimeter defense? The Shockers are among the College Basketball Championship Odds favorites.

    Kansas

    • College Basketball Championship Odds: +1600
    Kansas lost at home to Texas Tech but has not lost since, rolling off four straight wins in a brutal Big 12. They have only lost once to teams who are not in the top 25 when they fell to Washington back in December. However, their lack of depth and lack of height will cause them problems once they get into the Big Dance.

    Purdue

    • College Basketball Championship Odds: +1600
    Purdue lost to Tennessee and Western Kentucky in that treacherous Battle 4 Atlantis. However, they have won all 14 of their games since then. Of their 18 total wins, 14 have come by at least 10 points.

    Kentucky

    • College Basketball Championship Odds: +1600
    Kentucky is unusually inconsistent this season. Of their four losses, two come to teams outside the KenPom top 50. Their issues come on the defensive end of the floor, as they go through phases in which they cannot get a single key stop, and their offense can’t make up the difference. Can they solve the problem in time for the tournament? Since their loss at West Virginia, Virginia has reeled off nine consecutive wins. They’ve beaten North Carolina and Rhode Island among their four wins against KenPom top-50 squads.
