It is fitting that we look ahead to the 2023 motor sports year on December 14, which is the 75th birthday of NASCAR. Back in 1947, this particular Sunday started a four-day series of meetings that featured businessmen, race car owners, drivers and promoters. Tey met in the Ebony Room, a rooftop lounge at the Streamline Hotel, an Art Deco hotel in Daytona. The Streamline Hotel had also hosted Al Capone as they traveled to warmer climes during World War II. “Big Bill” France had summoned the group together, and the meetings turned what had been a chaotic sport into an organization that is one of the titans of racing today. Let’s take a look at 2023 in Formula 1 and NASCAR as you think about how to plan out your Auto Racing betting.

Joey Logano picked just the right time to peak, and he ended up with the 2022 Cup Series title as a result. He also has an elite crew and an elite crew chief, and the group rose up and dominated when the races were most important. Logano is still just 32 years old, so he could still have five or six – or even more – top-shelf seasons ahead of him.
Chase Elliott won five races in 2022, and he was in the mix at the Championship 4, but the frustration he experienced should motivate him to push even harder at the end next year. Having five victories is a sign of a solid team, so this is another driver who we should read a lot about next year.
Ross Chastain used to be a watermelon farmer, but he has definitely climbed the ladder since those days. At the start of 2022, few took him seriously as a Cup Series contender, but by the end of the season, no one took him for granted – and it’s just his team’s first year. He pushes limits and drives without fear, and we will have him on our wager cards a lot next year.

Sergio Perez faces a make-or-break year going into 2023. He scored 115 more points than he did in 2021, and he won two races and found 11 podiums. However, he was also 149 points back of teammate Max Verstappen, who took his second world championship in as many years. Perez had the benefit of driving the best equipment in the sport, along with Verstappen, so there will be pressure on him to improve.
Lewis Hamilton not only failed to win a race in 2022 – he did not even secure a pole, as Mercedes started 2022 with major car problems and could not catch up after making some changes throughout the year. He had his worst year in the Driver’s Championship as far as finishing position in his career, and the lowest point total since the 2013 season. Assuming Mercedes can figure out the technical side, expect Hamilton to enter 2023 with a giant chip on his shoulder.
