The NASCAR Camping World Truck Series returns on Saturday night with the Wise Power 200, set for 7:30 pm Eastern time at Kansas Speedway. The race will run 134 laps, for 200 miles, and you can catch the action on FS1, with the radio call on the Motor Racing Network. John Hunter Nemechek won the last truck series race, taking the ToyotaCAre 250 on April 17 at Richmond Raceway.
Let’s take a look at the last race recap as you consider your NASCAR Truck Series betting for Saturday night’s scrum.
NASCAR News: Camping World Truck Series Wise Power 200 Preview
Kyle Busch is having a hard time winning races even when he drops down from the Cup Series to race with the trucks, as he lost to one of his team drivers as Nemechek picked up his second victory in the last four Camping World Truck Series events. He led for 114 of the 250 laps in the race, including the last 17 after he recovered from a pit stop. Busch has a dozen wins at Richmond, with six in the Cup Series and six in the Xfinity Series but still does not have a win behind the wheel of a truck.
This means that the KBM team, though, has won four straight races in the Camping World Truck Series. Two have gone to Nemechek, and the other have been Busch and Martin Truex Jr. At Richmond, KBM almost pulled off the sweep, as Nemechek, Busch and Chandler Smith held the top three positions, but Tyler Ankrum maneuvered around Smith in the last few laps to swipe third place. Smith still came in fourth. Johnny Sauter, a former truck series champion, came in fifth, and Todd Gilliland and Ben Rhodes followed him. The defending champ, Grant Enfinger, came in eighth. Sam Mayer and Austin Hill completed the top ten, and the reigning truck series champ, Sheldon Creed, came in 11th.
The first half was all Enfinger, as he led 71 of the initial 73 laps and claimed the Stage 1 win. After the restart, Busch came out in the early lead, but then Nemechek moved into first at a Lap 100 restart and held it most of the rest of the way. Nemechek edged Enfinger to beat Stage 2. After that, Nemechek got challenge after challenge, and the last 110 laps produced seven cautions.
Kyle Busch seems like a smart pick this weekend. He just dominated the field on the last intermediate track in Atlanta, and the team won’t be experimenting with setups this time around. Nemechek and Busch should be dueling at the end, and the driver that makes the mistake at the worse time is likely to end up on the short end.
Zane Smith could have won any of the three races in Kansas a year ago. In two of those races, his teammates ran into him, and in the third, competitors rolled the dice with their pit decisions and ended up ahead of him on the last restart, and he couldn’t come all the way back.
Austin Hill could have a shot if Nemechek and Busch have problems. However, if that happens, Sheldon Creed could also jump into the gap. Chandler Smith has not grown much because of a lack of opportunities to practice. He didn’t do well in Atlanta, but that had a lot to do with his setup.
Raphael Lessard set a huge wreck in motion at Kansas a year ago in the fall, and in the July doubleheader his races were decent — but not elite. His 2021 has been disappointing, except for that third-place result at Bristol.
